Which Media Device - all in one

Featured Replies

I got extremely tired of all the various media devices I am using - none of them did it all. So I looked for the ideal all-in-one media device. All the 'new' media devices do some things, but not others. Does anyone know of a media device that will do all of these things:

Gigabit LAN and 802.ac WiFi access to modem/router. Connect 3 x 4TB External Drives (600+ movies) via USB 3. Connect wireless keyboard and mouse via USB 2/3. Bluetooth 3/4 for 3D glasses. USB 3 connection for games console. Connection for SDcards. Output sound (5.1 min) and video (1080p and 3D) to Amp system via HDMI 2.0. Also a VGA output (when travelling). Powerful quad-core CPU (i5 equiv or more), 2GB+ graphics card/GPU, 8GB+ RAM, Inbuilt hard drive (1TB ideal) for storage of programs, games, music and some video files (golf instructions etc.). Webcam (min 720p) and Mic for Skype and Line access. Play all video formats - including 3d. Inbuilt media player able to play all music types of files. Provide access to on-line services : Netflix, IFlix, IlikeHD, 365sport.tv, Youtube, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and via VPN services to services like overseas services like ITVPlayer, BBC, Ozonline, and Netflix (US etc.). Able to install/run Kodi or Plex or Media Portal. Able to use the main internet browsers - Internet Explorer and Chrome. Able to install/run anti-virus and anti-malware software and a customisable firewall. Able to install/run VLC and other media players. DVD/Bluray player/burner for 'borrowed' movies and for digital video editing/copying using apps like MakeMKV, Pinnacle and Coral.

Or you could use a NUC (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/nuc/overview.html).

But Webcam etc you have to buy separately

Ps: Not cheap. i5 is around 15k EXCL RAM and SSD and OS

I use them and I have all my Movies stored on a NAS (2x) don't need to worry about External drives.

It is called a computer.

Yes, a Windows PC is the only device able to play ALL media files that I know of. Nothing else is 100% compatible. Most things (Apple products, Android devices) dont even come close.

You can buy a Windows 10 mini-PC for well under 5000B (equiv) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tronsmart-Ara-X5-Windows-Graphics-Black/dp/B015NT6UZQ and it will do the lot (possible caveat for some 4k or H265 video, for which a PC with a more powerful video card may be required). It also runs any standard Windows programme you care to name (though it is not suitable for gaming or apps requiring intensive processor use, for obvious reasons). I have one of these and it's great, and another one works very well as a modest desktop business machine (email, surfing, Word, Excel).

Thanks - saw those Tronsmart devices - look to be the best of the type. Some of them - especially the Android devices are very limited - have 2 of them already (waste of money). Plus I have a WDLive device that I use to play movies via USB - brilliant at that - but I cannot add any Apps and no browser. As you say the 'imitation' devices dont do everything - dont even come close. I think I will follow your lead - get a 2nd windows device just for media/streaming - and use my laptop for the editing/copying and the more secure stuff (like banking).
