Amazon has taken over my search engine.

Featured Replies

Anytime I try and use Google to search Amazon opens offering books on the subject I'm searching for. Can anyone please tell me how to rid myself of Amazon and go back to using my search engine normally. I am a real Dummy with computers so any advice in lay terms will be appreciated.

What browser are you using?

Probably inadvertently installed an Amazon toolbar with browser. Assuming you're running Win7, go to Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program > scroll down to Amazon Browser bar or similar > right click > uninstall.

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't used Amazon for months. I'm running Windows 8.1.

I tried what you suggested and can't find Amazon.

Try going into 'settings' in the top right corner of the screen (it'll be either 3 vertical dots or a gear) then scroll down to 'manage search engines'. Once there you can see if Google is your default search engine.

Thanks. I tried what you said but I cant see manage search engines.

I am using Mozarilla with google as my default browser.

Clear your browsing history and cookies, saved web pages, etc. For chrome there are some pretty good ad blockers too.

For Mozilla; try clicking on the three bars inn the upper right. Look for the 'option' icon in the pop-up;click on that. Then from the list on the left click 'Search" should be the second one on the list.

That will take you to your default search engines. There's a drop down list, check to make sure Google is checked.

That did the trick. I am most grateful. Thank you.

I just noticed on Mozilla if you click on the little magnifying glass on the 'search' box you get a drop down menu with the search engines you can choose from. Alot easier to switch between search engines than going into settings. Maybe you clicked on that by accident to get Amazon taking over your browser.
