Why is 81 mg. aspirin treated like a narcotic?

6 year old aspirin would almost certainly have begun to decompose and smell of acetic acid, like vinegar.

Stuff and nonsense. The decomposition (hydrolysis) reaction requires the presence of water. Aspirin kept in a sealed container or strip won't decompose like that.

Family doctor says he can't dispense more than 30 days supply ... but said I'll try and get you a bottle (1000 tabs) from his supplier

I am sure you are well aware,different rules everywhere you go,which is good and bad.I get 2 small plastic containers of 60 each,no probs,no perscription.

Old wives' tales carry a lot of weight here. Aspirin makes blood dangerously thin; Hermesetas sweeteners rumoured to cause cancer; ice cream forbidden if you're ill etc.

I am on a serious amount of controlled medication for a chronic condition. In case I get ill abroad, I bring with me a letter from my specialist which shows the amount of medication I take so that a hospital will know about my condition in an emergency.

Once I was searched by customs on entry to Thailand and they saw the meds - I had three months worth. No problem.

Some pharmacies seem to make one sign for buying 81 mg Aspirin, some don't ... from my experience.

Here in Chiangmai, most big chains refuse to sell it without prescription. ( Boots and Watson in particular ) I have to get it from the smaller pharmacy .

Most pharmacist do not even know why. Just following order from the head office in Bangkok....My cardiologist at RAM Hospital does not even know about this restriction.

Some pharmacists, suggest that it is a blood thinner and some patient should not take it. If you have dengue fever that can turn hemorrhagic, you should stop taking aspirin too. maybe Sheryl can add her comment on that.

I imagine that shop was happy to sell them for 1B each. I buy mine in Sainsbury's supermarket in the UK for 0.5B each, and I bring back 400 of them on my yearly shopping trip. If only I could do all my shopping for the whole year in the UK rather than have to pay way over the odds for a very poor choice of things here.

I long ago gave up looking for logic in any Thai rules.

I would certainly do that if I knew of one and it was convenient, and you may have noticed that I've been responding to suggestions in that vein.

I buy at Sainsbury's for several reasons other than the low price:

1) I go there several times anyway whenever I'm in the UK

2) they always have stock

3) there are no bizarre hoops to jump through

4) no queues

I didn't say that it was OK, I said that it seems unlikely even here that anyone would be arrested and detained for importing 400 81mg Aspirin tablets that by all accounts are available over the counter here. I stand by that.

Total ignorance here. I had an idea I guess but never really checked it as I thought letter from Doctor and medical records would cover it.

At the moment I'm traveling with:

Oxycodone

Endone

Lithium

HGH

Testosterone

I've definitely got more than a month as I'm here for 35 days. I'll definitely be getting cleared when I'm back next month.......

This is getting ridiculous. We're down to 0.2 Baht/pill. A saving of 0.3 Baht over the previous bid. That is 109 Baht/year less spent on medicine and could be invested in over two large beers.

2,000 pills = 6 years' supply @ 1.5 Baht / week.

There is a man totally convinced on the efficiency of the pills. Most of us oldies hesitate at buying more than a day's supply of anything in case we don't get to see tomorrow.

The accounting could be a total disaster if you die with the bottle half full.

But I am impressed. Honestly. The poster is certainly not one of those guys who cannot live in Thailand for less than 100,000 Baht/month.

I wonder how much I could save if I ordered six year's supplies of all my consumables?

As far as I'm concerned any saving is worth making as long as it doesnt cost me too much extra to make the saving.

I will happy plan my shopping schedule to buy the right item in the right place at the best price but I certainly would not make a special trip to the other side of Bangkok to save 300B.

Being sensible with money is one of the reasons that I have as much as I do. YMMV

If carpidrin is 100% pure aspirin, then you need 100% pure aspirin, of any kind. I doubt that carpidrin is 100% pure, however... It surely has all the extra glue and bulk stuff necessary to make it a tablet. Same as all the other aspirin.

Never go to Boots for anything. Just a big corporation running shops filled with uncooperative pharmacists trying to separate you from your money. Really, a Thai pharmacy is usually so much better. I prefer the one-off mom and pop pharmacies so long as they have a selection to meet my needs, though have sometimes been known to visit a PharmaChoice. I mean, if Boots wants 900 Baht plus a prescription, while another shop wants 180 Baht for the same thing with no prescription necessary, kind of a no brainer. Too, I'm remembering when our old dog was trying to die and the vet hospital was hammering us for 5,000 Baht for heart drugs every month. Funny thing... Most of the drugs were available at a nearby people pharmacy -- same dosage, same blister pack -- for a fraction of the cost the vet hospital wanted. Imagine that...
