Any suggestions for a messaging app (Android) that functions like LINE or WhatsAp with free messaging along with voice and video calling but that does not try to raid all your contacts and tie in to social networks? In other words, an app that lets the user easily control who has access to it.

I understand that both parties to any conversation will need the same app.

LINE has "letter sealing" encryption; must be enabled on both ends.

WhatsApp! has embedded end-to end encryption.

You can control these apps access to your privacy/contacts, etc., but it does require some effort, primarily at set-up.

Some people like Signal: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms&hl=en

including Edward Snowden, gets a 7/7 from EFF.

Whatsapp is generally the best and like another poster said End 2 End encryption by default although to be honest I wouldn't trust any of them to say its 100 % safe, i remember Blackberry being really secure until it was revealed that the whole of BBM for consumers was using the same encryption key!!!

I think if you want 100% security you meet the people you wish to chat to in a public place both bring notepads, pens and a lighter write down your text instead of speaking then after the conversation is finished burn the paper.

Not much use to him, is it?

After signing controversial anti-terrorist legislation earlier today, President Putin ordered the Federal Security Service (the FSB, the post-Soviet successor to the KGB) to produce encryption keys to decrypt all data on the Internet. According to the executive order, the FSB has two weeks to do it. Responsibility for carrying out Putin's instructions falls on Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the FSB.
