Hi,

hoping any any one has experienced the same situation and can offer advice.

i am an Australian citizen, my partner is Laos, we gave birth to a little girl in February in Pattaya. Since then I have returned to Aus, she has returned to Laos with baby with only baby Thai birth certificate. Border control had no issues letting her out of Thailand and into Laos.

We have since gained citizenship by descent and are just waiting on her Australain passport due next week.

Our concern here is gaining an entry/ exit stamp for our baby to stay/leave Laos, as I understand at this point she would be an illegal immigrant.

australian embassy say they cannot help us with this part of the process.

1. Is it easy to get Laos entry stamp in new passport, what documents may be required. (We are hearing marriage documents which we are not)

2. Can we just go to border with new passport and exit Laos and enter Thailand.

3. Should we just renter Thailand with no passport and because she have Thai birth certificate, present new passport at Thai embassy and obtain exit stamp from Thailand? Could this be an issue?

We are both getting a bit nervous and worried about this, as she say I don't want to end up in the monkey house.

i would think she should not have been allowed to get back to Laos in the first place if there would be issues.

Laos citizens cannot hold dual nationality, so your child is Australian.  She'll need to have a visa to visit Laos.  However, as she's a baby, they will normally allow to enter/exit Laos at land borders, by just showing her birth certificate.  My fiancee is Laotian and our son is British.  He can come and go between Thailand and Laos, over land borders, with just his original Thai birth certificate.  We don't show or even carry his UK passport on such trips.

Thanks Brewster, that's great news. Very much appreciated.

We are both really nervous about leaving Laos, probably next week.

Aus embassy say they may stop her on Laos side hence the worry.

She did get from Thailand to Laos with birth certificate in March so I guess it should be ok going back.

We want to come to Australia a few days after she is in Thailand, I am hoping we can get entry stamp into Thailand so we can leave Thailand for Australia. She does have Thai birth certificate so may not be such a big issue, I guess that's the next step. Don't want to buy air ticket only to have refusal of exiting Thailand.

About leaving Thailand, my question now is did you get British  passport issued in Thailand and get stamped into Thailand.  We wonder if because her Australian passport is issued in Laos if she enters with birth certificate will we have issue with the Thai government getting an entry stamp at embassy in Bangkok?

Can we just go to airport with Australain passport for baby and no original entry stamp. Maybe we could renter Laos using passport to Leave Thailand before doing the airport  way we may get Laos entry visa then exit visa and Thai entry stamp.

My my partner has a 12 moth visa for Australia, so she is fine.

If she has a clean/new passport, you just produce the original Thai birth certificate at passport control and they make a note in her passport. You also complete a landing card for her, which I found very strange. Nevertheless it's a straightforward process.

Excellent,

Thanks Brewster, we will now just go back to Thailand with birth cerificate and exit st airport with new passport and birth certificate.

i did call Thai embassy and also airport to and they confirmed birth certificate and passport will be enough,

We are very relieved, well at least once baby and partner back in Thailand. Which my partner is comfortable that she can do.

Cheers, very much appreciated.

Hi Brewster, would you have any objection to my partner contacting your fiancé to talk about this. I could give you a number for her to call her on. Just to put her mind at ease.

Many people are in her ear and she is of course panicking. Hoping some advise straight from someone who knows would help her.

No problem, except we're currently on holiday in the UK and won't be back in Thailand until 20 August.  Which border crossing will she be coming back through?

Hi Brewster,

Thanks anyway but not to worry, my girls are here now in Aus.

We got a 3 day exit pass from local village and took her into Thailand.

My partner was held up at airport in BKK with a few standard questions but no issues.

Much appreciate your advice on this. I must say we were getting worried about Laos Govt.

Take it easy, hope you had a great holiday..

basically once we got the Aus citizenship and Aus passport for our girl my partner got the police in her village to give our daughter a 3 day pass to leave Laos and go to Thailand (to see doctor) once she was in Thailand my partner went to Airpor and left Bangkok on our daughter passport. A few questions at airport but no issue.

let me know if you want to chat about it. I will keep an eye out for a message from you
