jackoholly
HI all, Does anyone have a road map detailing a motorcycle friendly route from Bangkok to Pattaya and back? There are a few threads about this but from 5+ years ago so roads probably don't even exist anymore. Thanks in advance.

Gweiloman
Due to most of Hwy 7 being off limits to bikes (unless you can get on the frontage road which is a challenge in itself), this is probably now the quickest route https://goo.gl/maps/a719NEhu8c72 Hwy 3 unfortunately goes through quite a lot of towns but there are certain sections where you can open up. If not in a rush, you could do this route https://goo.gl/maps/2VNVQzT8Sex

It took me just over an hour. It was a relatively east route and simple to follow. All the research I did before the trip suggests this is the best route.

I do a similar route to this one - but I use Highway 3 for the first part, after going through Samut Prakarn. From Central Bangkok (Lower Sukhumvit area) I head to Rama 4, then turn off along the Port road to Bang Na then Soi Bearing to pick up Highway 3. This route is very slow in a car due to the new BTS line work, but on a bike you can clear this reasonably quickly. Then you have a nice ride with the river on one side and seafront restaurants on the other (behind the buildings about 500 m back from the main road is the sea front, although it's not visible from the road) - you can stop at a sea front restaurant for a break after clearing the traffic jams of Bangkok.

I have done your route before as well but it just takes forever. There are very few stretches on the first part of Hwy 3 where one can open up a bit, due to lots of traffic lights and like you said, the BTS construction. Gweiloman
What about coming back? I always try to take this route, especially if I have lunch around Lake Maprachan https://goo.gl/maps/JZxhwox3sYq

True - it's not quick, but for me I just do this run for the ride. It's not a commute for me - and I like to stop at the riverside stalls for an iced tea, then visit a seafront restaurant for lunch. I get to Bang Saen in time for dinner, stay in a local hotel, then come back the next morning. And yes, a slightly different return route back (usually because I miss a vital turn because I'm too busy avoiding the huge holes in the road). If I'm going for business - I'll use a car and stick to the Expressway.

I wouldn't mind leaving around 11 pm, take about an hour to get to one of these restaurants for lunch and then continue on down to Jomtien in time for a quick shower and dinner

I wouldn't mind leaving around 11 pm, take about an hour to get to one of these restaurants for lunch and then continue on down to Jomtien in time for a quick shower and dinner There's several restaurants in a cluster and there's a narrow road that runs along the sea joining them. You can ride along the road on your bike, but it's too narrow for cars. The road goes from concrete sections to a dirt road - so you play at being an adventure riding hero (or is that just me??) . There's covered parking for cars and bikes next to the restaurants. I've been to several of the restaurants, all were good, but the names are mostly in Thai - but the one I can find a link to is 'Rabieng Ta Le' 721/14 moo 14, Sukhumvit Road. The others are all close by, but this one had great fried fish and crab in curry sauce. http://www.rabiengta-le.com/rabiengta-le/ I always need a few goes to find the correct place to make the right turn off Suk Road - so Sat Nav or Google Maps would be a good idea.

I did see a thread from 3-4 years ago about this and no-one had a solution. Ok, I guess I can live with it. may be due to the fact I am on google.co.th/maps

At the top left of the instruction sidebar, there are three horizontal lines. Click on that and there is a language option.

Yep, OK when I expand the directions it is just the place names that are in Thai, I guess that is something that google hardcoded. OK thanks anyway. OK thanks anyway. Yes, I believe it's google hardcoded. There are lots and lots of criticisms on the internet about this as the older version of Google map did not have it but it's impossible to downgrade now.
Paijeng
Hi, I checked the first route " https://goo.gl/maps/a719NEhu8c72 " on Google map and saying the route has tolls. Is motorcycle allow to ride on the expressway/highway that has tolls in Thailand? Thank you.

And even on 3 are sometimes warnings that motorbikes are not allowed (to pass the overpasses) but just continue anyway.
