Is this why so many Thais are getting fat?

Stopped in the mall for Ramen noodles with the girl the other night.

First sip of the soup, quite delicious, a little salty but flavors well balanced overall. The girl took a sip of hers and finding it bland for her taste began the earnest task of adding:

5 teaspoons of sugar

4 teaspoons of ground chilli powder

2 teaspoons of vinegar.
A further taste of the soup resulted in 3 further teaspoons of sugar being added

That’s 8 teaspoons of sugar added in a medium sized bowl of soup!!

They've always been doing that.....

The further away from city & 7/11's with their 5 - 10B cookies & snacks the thinner & more fit the women seem to be....

They're doing real work & are eating in a more traditional way......

Adding heaps of sugar. Cooking with excess bad oils. Existing on food made as cheaply as possible. Adding the extra and sadly most important new food group, practically anything vacuum packed from convenience stores. Not getting enough water. Almost never exercising.

That's why they are getting fat.

My guess is most of today's Thai food is nothing like it once was. And yes Thais load in the sugar. Plus there are all these sweet cold drinks from coffee to fruit shakes. Thailand is doomed. In about 10 years, we will really be hearing about the nations health problems in the top news every day. It starts when people are very young and their metabolisms get ruined. Once that happens there isn't much of healthy future for them. Sugar is white death.

Thais have always put sugar and salt in their grub, their taste buds crave it....But the influx of western fizzy pop and sugar coated stuff like doughnuts has moved the goal posts...

Only to mention eating on the hour and every hour  7 - 11,  McDonald's,  KFC and  Pizza Hut type places.

Made me remember what Thai friend said to me, " lf we're not eating we're thinking about it ".

Another l like was " We don't eat the table and we don't eat the boats ". :)

I wonder when sugar cane was introduced here. I would think that palm sugar is the natural sugar that might be found in Thai foods of the past. Sugar has become dirt cheap and so is added to everything. Once foods weren't so sweet but now sugar in them is normal. They often put sugar in stir-fried pork with basil and chilis. I don't think that was the case 50 years ago.

I wonder if all that overdosing on sugar is what makes thais fly off the handle faster than anyone else I know.

Strange to mention....

If we go out to eat my wife and kids do put sugar on the food quite often - but not always....60/40......

But at home, where we eat most of the time, the sugar goes untouched.....There's no server for it  with our spices or condiments & unless baking it's just not used.....For food or coffee = nada....
