squid master Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 anybody know any meeting for foreigners(long stay residents) in bangkok who actually live normal? ?????
berybert Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Most of the expat pubs are full of the more normal sort of Western people. Go to any of them on a quiz night and you should end up making some nearly normal friends.
smutcakes Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Try the Robin hood or Royal Oak in the week. Many long term expats have a beer there in the evening, many of them stable, normal and some even highly successful businessman. They each have a quiz night a week as poster above mentioned and it is easy to tag into a team and meet new people.
IMA_FARANG Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 I live in Bangkok and living "normally" is the last thing I want to do. To boring being just "normal".
Spaniel Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 I recommend not looking for friends in any establishment that sells alcoholic beverages.
NickJ Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Sukhumvit Soi 4 Nana. Past the Plaza. Same side of the street. the Tavern Bar. Real small place. Decent burgers and other food. Always has the American sports on. Run by an American. Great guy. Lots of Bangkok longtimers stop by.
Thainess Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 If you are a falang long stayer in Bangkok, then by definition you're not normal. A normal person would get out of Bangkok after a few days and go somewhere sane! In my experience, having been here for 14 years, the longer they stay, the weirder they get. Speaking personally, I know I had already lost my sanity after about 2 years in Bangkok.
JHolmesJr Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Anyone who is cool with living in thailand 365 days a year cannot be 100% normal….this Im sure of. Plus I cant see how people who attend pub quiz nites are automatically given clearance as normal….Ive found them mildly annoying with their 'look at me , Im so smart' attitude….the smartest boy in class…thought we left that behind in school.
billd766 Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 It is a bit tricky to leave BKK if you are working there 5 or 6 days a week as an expat for years on end.

NickJ Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Well, Take The Tavern off the list. The owner sadly passed a few days ago.

But you as well cannot bring with you your favorite pet poodle
orchidlady Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Try meet up.com Bangkok edition. It lists activities by interest type-sports, cards, exercise activities, day traveling, movie and coffee meetups and hundreds more.
TimShaw Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I second @orchidlady and highly recommend you try meetup.com in order to meet normal people.
honu Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I was just going to post about a meet-up I attended this week, a series called "Random Thainess," kind of odd for being presentation based. It was my first time to go but I presented, on the subject of tea, a hobby of mine (I'll add more about that in another thread). I've also attended meetups through a group called Internations (easy to find online), which I had mixed feelings about. It felt a little like business networking, but for social purposes. I've heard others claim the real networking starts after some drinking and a shift to an after party scene, but that would bring it close to bar-scene socializing, which should be easy to turn up. I feel normal enough; I have a family here, and work in IT. Due to both of those I'm not doing much with such events (I've attended 3 or 4 meet-ups in 8 years), or with socializing in general, since I mostly chase my kids around for fun. I would guess meeting "normal" people would involve linking up through common interests or circumstances, just as with anywhere else, with a lot of expats tending to group up by nationality, some more than others.
Baanguru Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 What do you mean by normal living? I've so many foreign friends in BKK and they are not well I don't consider them living normal as they are very workaholic. They still love to socialize once in a while but not the type who will go clubbing any time they want. They are also professional people living in Bangkok for quite some time now.

I assume you are describing the "salt of the earth types" as opposed to the sewer rats ! !
