webfact
Thai man suffocated after sniffing his bike's petrol tank Image: CH7 NAKHON PATHOM: -- Police say that a Thai man in Nakorn Pathom suffocated after he sniffed gasoline in his motorbike's petrol tank. They say he passed out after creating a vacuum and died of lack of oxygen. Phokaew police and medics who went to the house of Pradap Prakhonchai, 45, a vegetable trader, found him sitting on a chair Tuesday evening with his face leaning forward buried in the opening of his motorcycle's under-seat gas tank. He had been dead around eight hours. Police learnt that Pradap was a substance abuse sniffer and think that he sniffed the vapour from the gas tank before he went out to work selling vegetables on his bike. They said that he breathed in so deeply that he created a vacuum and passed out attached to the gas tank. He died from the resulting suffocation, they said. canuckamuck
I am just impressed that he could create a vaccum while sniffing gas. It must have been a very simple one.

More than likely as creating a vacuum would take a bit of intelligence which seems to be lacking.

jacko45k
Sometimes the crazy statements coming from the police as to the reasons for a person's demise would better to be left in the 'vacuum' in their heads.
halloween
The withdrawal of vapour causing a vacuum is a common problem. That is why petrol sniffers are recommended to only do so with a lit cigarette in their mouth.
Pib
Don't know if I buy the "created a vacuum" portion of the story since it's hard to create a good vacuum for any length of time without a really good, air tight seal. Hard to image the irregular surface & shape of your mouth/nose being able to hold a vacuum on the fuel tank inlet. But I could see him passing-out due to associated medical reasons from the chronic sniffing and then the fumes causing respiratory failure after X-minutes. Valentine
The cynicism exhibited here is quite amazing but not surprising & hardly any sympathy going out for the man & his family whom, most likely, none of you could possibly know. Phrases such as "Darwin award" & "it could not have been a Thai" (which became very popular after Kho Tao) are becoming extremely tiresome & show a lack of imagination IMO.
