Thailand's employment in decline in 2Q16

BANGKOK, 30 August 2016 (NNT) - Thailand's employment situation has been in decline in the second quarter of this year, according a report from the National Economic and Social Development Board.

NESDB Secretary-General Poramethee Wimonsiri said on Monday that the latest findings showed the country’s employment rate dropped 0.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2016, when compared with the same time in 2015.

Mr. Poramethee stated that, during the months of April and June, there were around 410,000 unemployed people, or 1.08 per cent of the total workforce, compared with the 0.8% record at the same time last year.

He said that the main cause of the rise in the unemployment rate was the drought situation, which has lowered the workforce in the agricultural sector by 6.2 per cent.

As for the second half of this year, the NESDB Secretary-General said that it remains to be seen if there will be any improvement in either the hiring or the revenue situation in the farming sector, while other factors that also need to be monitored are the employment situation in the industrial sector and the adoption of the government’s new minimum wage rule, which drove up the pay rate to 550 baht a day for employees with specified skills.

Yeah, yeah. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-02/thailand-s-unemployment-rate-is-a-ridiculously-low-0-6-here-s-why

Quote

More than 40 percent of Thailand's population is engaged in agriculture, where there is a high degree of underemployment and off-season unemployment. The underemployed are counted among the employed and make up about 0.5 percent of that total. If, for instance, you lose your job as a bank teller and return home and lend a hand at your dad's farm for at least one hour a week, you are considered as employed.

Unemployment rate is statisticly very low as many of the ones who are employed are useless: in my country more then 50% would be kicked out for 0 productivity....if i stroll around in shops here it's incredible to see them standing around, chatting and playing with their mobiles only!

Closing down bars and massage parlours, kicking rural folk off public land where they've scratched out a living for years and cracking down on traditional beach vendors and businesses hasn't exactly helped.
