Facebook Scam ?

My Gf is being asked to upload a scan of her ID card to facebook servers to authenticate her ID, smells of a scam to me, or is this the Thai Government upscaling efforts to control the masses from asking questions that cannot be answered ?

 

I'm in Thailand and have had no such requests, is it a Thai citizen thing or some kind of scam, any others had a similar experience ?

Why would she, even if it were legit, which I highly doubt.

She probably has a name that does not appear to be real, Facebook has been doing this for some time.

 

Alternate is to open a new account that appears to be a genuine name.

Even using the mobile phone and entering the code that is sent via sms doesn't log in, they want further ID, this is strange, had the account for 2 years.

As long as it's a legitimate Facebook site, then it probably is a legitimate Facebook verification process.

 

It's happened to a few people I know, usually when they have had more than one account.

 

Which begs the question: Does your gf have a Facebook account you don't know about?

That's what FB and Thai government are waiting for.

No more investigation needed to find out who clicked a Like at the wrong place, writing "yes" to a "forbidden" comment and then thrown to prison for years.

 

Hands off that greedy megalomaniac data crawler named FB.

I live in Nowhere, Oklahoma. Yes, it exists!

So far no "suspect" messages from FB.

If so, dump account.

My son has had that problem twice already. He uses his real name, verified phone number and email, and yet after a few months he get this issue.

It happened to me a couple of times. I realised I was using a VPN or logging in from another location.

 

My account was blocked. I was asked to recognise some photos of my friends. I couldn't name them all. Then I was asked for more ID. I scanned my passport but covered a few of the digits in the number. My account was reopened.

Me no like.  A security check this severe may be necessary if exchange of physical things or money was involved, but for a glorified chat site like FB?  No way!  If it was necessary I would insist verification be done over the phone, by voice contact with another human. 

 

It's only a matter of time until you wake up some day and see the headline "(name of site here) hacked, millions of identities compromised."

Opened a new account using a different first name, used a Thai nickname before.

 

After further research it's happened to many people, thanks guys.

I just tried to open a Facebook account.  It told me they need a photo ID and and a telephone number.  No way.  I just want to watch some streaming 'broadcasts,' particularly the Bill Maher special this week.  Is there any way around this, like a read-only account?

Beware your Thai GF, they have many sides to them and are masters at disguising themselves online so that certain others are unable to track their activities on there.

 

They may have several social media accounts and dating site profiles, using different names or nicknames, different photos, email addresses and phone numbers. Her facebook you know about is probably the facebook she wants you to see, the goody goody version of her, the rest becomes almost impossible to trace because they are sly and know all the tricks.

Having only lived in Thailand full time since 1990 I really appreciate the input of experts like you, I'd never survive without your valuable help.
