I gather most areas are  safe in the city/state but some offer different flavor than others.    One of the most appealing things when traveling for the Missus is night markets and stalls where she can buy things cheaply.      I on the other hand need  a restaurant or chair where I can sit down, read and wait for her.

I think you are talking about the Bugis area (do a google search) there is a night market there

IMO, there are not many night markets like in Thailand in Singapore but I could be wrong about that, and goods there will not be as cheap as in Thailand
