SIM Card Info For Tourist

Featured Replies

hi, got my sister coming over in January, can anyone point me in the right direction as to getting a sim card for her, i am with AIS myself, as all cards have to be registered now ??so i suppose she just take her passport along, how about proof of address etc. and what sim would you recommend thanks

I suggest you get your sister a pre-paid AIS SIM, ie from the same provider you are using.

Unless things have changed since I got a pre-paid SIM in January of this year, only the passport is needed, no proof of address. Just the same, have her photograph the arrival card she fills out on the plane so that she can show this for the address where she is staying in Thailand, if needed.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

You can also buy the SIM before your sister arrives. There is no problem with having multiple SIM cards registered to one person.

There are kiosks for all three major providers in the airport arrivals hall...cant miss them.  All three: True, AIS & DTAC have "Tourist" sim packages, usually with a couple of gigs of data and voice calling, somewhere between B199 & B299.  They will install and set it up for her.

thankyou for the information

Unless she needs service upon arrival - the queues at the mobile phone providers (level 2, just outside Customs, in the area of doors 7 - 10) at the airport can be quite long with 15 - 100 people queued up - I would just buy her a 49 baht SIM, register it with your credentials, go to a top-up machine and add several 10 baht top-ups for 30 day extensions of expiry, and/or 100 - 500 baht. Then try to figure out what her requirements might be for mobile data, then subscribe to a plan the day before she arrives. In this scenario you can also inform her of the number in case she wants to give that out to family/friends in advance of her trip.

I do this quite often for visitors; very easy, simple and straight-forward. Saves time at the airport on arrival, but obviously not good if you need service at the airport. I sometimes mail the SIM to visitors, if enough time, so they have it in hand on touch-down.
