Police and consumer protection agencies raided the Tawana Market in Bangkapi yesterday and found more than 2,500 pairs of fake Nike footwear.

Most of it came from abroad though some was produced in Thailand.

Six people were arrested for possessing and selling the merchandise and will face jail of up to four years and fines of 400,000 baht or both.

The arrests come after continued pressure from foreign companies who want the Thai authorities to act to protect their brands from copy and sale of fakes.

The Tawana Market is next to The Mall in Bangkapi in eastern Bangkok and is one of the busiest shopping areas of the capital.

I make distinction between 'cost' and 'worth' it's just my nature on how I see the world...

yeah, and I don;t shy away from saying about that big Louis Vuitton/Prada/ etc etc bust that happened near Mikes on Beach Rd Pattaya a while back.

The looks on gawkers faces, at all the rubbish being tossed   - was priceless

(which takes me back to my 1st comment about cost and worth, when I consider the meaning of 'priceless', for that matter )

800 baht a pair is expensive for fake Nike. Should be about 400 baht.

They should be charged with sell over priced shoes.

I can buy for 300 baht all day long. Good for 1 year then buy new one, different color and style.

Ah yes the foreign big businesses take preference of course. Their profits must be protected at any cost. More than likely the companies that made the fakes also made the real deal only the labeling was different. Does these companies get preferential treatment on the scales of justice?

These comp[anies are very similar to banks. The legal mafia that rips people off. Big companies including Nike, Adidas ,and various other brands are using "Ex- East European countries" and pay their employees way less than for example China does.

I've just recently seen a documentary in Croatia and the management of these companies should be behind bars.

They pay way under minimum wage because they know that these people don't have other job opportunities.

Have you ever thought about all the cops and investigators, schools and the MoE, including the TCT, Immigration and other governmental institutions using fake Windows copies?

I've helped our local Immigration with a little PC problem, never saw a genuine Windows program at a school, etc..

Now we're talking about billions of $ not only  2 million baht. Who're the bad guys?

The curiosity is that the cops will write all their reports by using pirated copies. Amen. -:post-4641-1156693976:

Yes pigtails it is just starting. In a Chinese plant in Nigeria they make shoes for 1/10 the cost than back in China. China as bought up the docks in Greece for pennies on the dollar and is offering employment to Greeks on the basis that they own you body and soul. Your on call 24/7/365. If your grocery shopping your on call to work immediately. They use and abuse people at will. They call it the new Silk Road. I call it the Highway to Hell.

I just went to a huge market, they had several stands with hundreds of pairs of Nike's for 400 baht....also Adidas.

The Thai know when the microsoft inspectionteams are coming. My friend (and her whole huge office) had to bring their computers home the day before they came. So they all worked by pen and paper that day hahahaha..
