Actually it's not 20 but in the 70s depending on whose figures. That's for PPP GDP.....but still well above Vietnam

He added that the prime minister was disappointed with the results and urged the Education Ministry to speed up the implementation of the national education plan which aims to increase the PISA score by about 100 points in all subjects in 15 years.

Cancel the submarines and other to numerous to mention military expenditures and invest in education. The future is in educated young minds not rusting military hardware.

Job well done PM. We don't want the peasents educated. Bravo, brandy and cigars all round.

"Dr Thirakiat admitted he was disappointed with the performance of Thai students".

Should he not be disappointed with the teachers and the course content?

Teachers are a bit of a closed society that tend to circle the wagons in times of trouble. I would guess there is lots of blame to go around. A friend of mine teaches English on a pro bono basis and he tells me half the class either sleeps or fingers their mobiles.

Fifteenth from the bottom would seem quite low bearing in mind that other countries experienced a turnaround in achievements including Australia , Singapore held its own, referring back to Australia they are spending half as much more than five years ago and the results showed that Oz students slipped back some one to two years in learning behind Singapore so I hope that's some consolation to General Prayut's disappointment, the education authorities in OZ are far from pleased possibly the amount spent on students in Oz would be twice as much as what Thailand spends on defence for half a year, its hard to judge, as I have never seen a correct set of figures for Thailand's military, if you get my drift..........................................................:coffee1:.

Oh you cynic you! How can you compare Oz with Thailand most of the kids in Oz go to schools with most of what they need, up to date text books with verified information, science and maths labs and libraries attached to every school !!  :sorry::wai:

I actually believe that this trend comes from the IT and technology advancements that's been over the last 20 years. When I grew up we had use our imagination when interacting and playing with our friends compared with today when you put 5 children in a room and they interact through Facebook and/or games.

There is a great book by Todd Openheimer written over a decade ago about the negative impact of technology in the classroom, "The Flickering Mind".

There is no joy for the UK, Australia or the USA in these results either. Why are students in these countries falling behind? ( and falling behind not only in respect of the highest ranked countries but also relative to their own levels in previous studies....that is, a real decline.

Not budget related ...as someone else mentioned, real expenditure has increased. Maybe something to do with the quality of teaching? Australian universities will take ANYONE with a pulse into a teaching degree ( why? To meet their quotas and to justify their own bloated salaries). When some of those teaching struggle with Grade 10 maths, it's understandable that students will have difficulty as well.

Oh give over. I teach grade 10 maths and it's bloody difficult.

GDP per capita is a very misleading statistic.

If I am not mistaken teachers get offered very little money to teach in rural Thailand...  teaching English in Bangkok on average earns you about 45,000 baht.. while teaching outside of Bangkok earns you less than 22,000 and I noticed recruiters are super desperate and are willing to hire almost anyone to fill in positions... IE rural poor are probably not getting  qualified or quality teachers.

I am also pretty disappointed in thai teaching methods... children are not allowed to question teachers or authority... they are basically told how something is suppose to be done and are expected to follow.

We don't have any heroes left to inspire them, to aspire to!

"What would John Wayne Do" ?

Who would you like to be like when you grow up? We had JFK, John Wayne, even Superman. Who are the kids of today's heroes?
