Recommended Nephrologists In BKK

Featured Replies

Seeking recommendations for nephrologists in BKK.  Older posts point to two referrals @ Bangkok Hospital.  However, those links are broken.

I have stage 3A CKD.  GFR has been relatively stable over the last 5+ years ranging from 53 to 59. More recently PTH has increased sharply but is barely below the upper band, while calcium is in normal range.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I will get back to you on this as I am away from my computer now but meanwhile can you indicate what the financial situation is (insurance, self-pay, cost a major concern or not?) and whether you are living in Thailand or just vidlsiting i.e. are we looking at long term care for years that may ultimately have to include dialysis or transplant? Those two questions are related as dialysis etc can run to big money in a private hospital here.

Sheryl,. My wife and I will be moving to Thailand early next year and will have top of the line medical insurance for 6 months.  After that we will self insure.  As mentioned, my gfr has been range bound and stable for 5+ years, but I understand that sometimes the progression of CKD can accelerate quickly.  I am 62 yo and am not planning on dialysis or transplant, but of course that assumption may have to change.  I am seeking a nephrologist who can review my current care plan and look more closely at the pth levels to determine if more action is required.  Thank you for the invaluable support you provide on this forum.

Since you will be self-pay I suggest you get under the care of Prof. Yingyos Avihingsanon at Chulalongkhorn Hospital, a leading teaching hospital.

It should be possible to see him through their after hours clinic. You will have to go in person to make the appointment and preferrably bring a Thai speaker (he is fluent in English but the nurses and admin staff are not). Expect fairly long waits. It is also possible to see him at Bumrungrad Hospital on Saturday mornings https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Yingyos-Avihingsanon

but will cost at least 3 times a much. For an initial consultation still OK but for the long term, get established as his patient at Chula.

Do not underestimate the amount you need to put aside for self-insurance. Nobody plans on dialysis  or transplant, but  when the necessity arrives, they are better than the alternative.

Thanks so much Sheryl.  Cannot say how much I appreciate the referral.  All the best to you.
