Surprised these events even make the news anymore, its such a regular occurrence !!

Just this morning I saw 2 accidents before 9am, one is a possible fatality but not heard since they took him to hospital ?

The government just don't give a <deleted>...

25,000 deaths a year is ridiculous..

By looking at the pic. They were smashed into in the slow lane.
My guess the speeding taxi was impatient and trying to overtake on the inside.

I see it all the time when I'm riding that road. It's insane at some of the things I see. So many close calls.

Goodness...that figure approaches the U.S. one, with a population of 330 million.

Headline is crap, was no collision with a taxi, was Tourists taken out by suicidal taxi more like whilst undertaking at speed, he should be done for manslaughter/death by dangerous driving

RIP to the poor person killed by this maniac and hope the other tourist makes a quick and full recovery

..at the risk of being accused of something...for having a different viewpoint than some people....

...maybe it is my name that evokes such actions...who knows...

...it seems with quite some regularity that:

....accidents involving foreigner drivers....when non-foreigners die ....are deemed to have killed the accident victims...

...whereas....when the inverse is true.....nobody.....or the vehicle....is to blame....

So sad to read this story and the grief caused to family members.

Taxi drivers are not the most popular people in many cities around the world but here in Phuket along with other forms of transport conveying people around the Island for a living are despised for their lack of road manners and recklessness towards other road users.

The English language media outlets on Phuket report mainly about local incidents.

If you want to read about that event you so succinctly described perhaps you should refer to the Bumpkin Times in the northern locality in which you reside.

Alternatively, stop visiting the Phuket forum as it seems to inflame you so much

Police arrived to find the two Russian men on the ground. Roman Melekhin, 25, was unresponsive with head and neck injuries. He was taken to Thalang Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His companion, Maksim Burmatov, 28, was conscious but with a head injury and a broken leg.

"Taxi driver Nattawat Thongthapae, 38, told police that he was driving from the airport in the middle lane when the accident happened.

“We were told that the Russian men were riding their motorbike in the left lane,” said Thalang Police Capt Sunan Pethnoo.

“The accident happened when the motorbike driver [allegedly] swerved in front of the taxi to cross the lanes to make the u-turn,” he said.

“[Taxi driver] Mr Nattawat said he tried to brake to avoid the collision, but it was loo late,” he added.

Police did not find helmets at the scene, Capt Sunan confirmed".

So the taxi driver claims he was in the center lane and the Russians tried to U-turn in front of him.

The police should be able to ascertain the point of impact to get to the truth of the matter.

Hopefully there's also some vision.

Look at the link above yours. All their gear is the left lane and the pool of blood is in the gutter.
Centre lane is unaffected from that image.
I ride this road a lot and I can give anyone this advice.
Speed. Keep everything behind you. Anyone lagging around at 50kph is in big danger.
It's easy to see these guys were just putting along and hit from behind.

Good observation, that's the way it looks to me now lets see what the police come up with.

I did look at that picture, and the victim certainly ended up in the gutter, but I decided that what appears to be debris from the crash is actually plastic bags, wrappers, containers, etc. discarded by the medical workers trying to stabilize the injured..

I think the point of impact is probably somewhere behind the photographer.

It's clear then that the middle lane scenario is an utter lie.
You can even see the splat impact, I'm guessing that's the initial head contact on the road and the pool of blood the medics are standing in is his resting place.
All in the left lane close to the gutter.

Makes my skin crawl seeing that splat.

every day there seems to be multiple reports of road traffic accidents in Phuket and they are often serious and deadly, it seems to have become the accident blackspot for the whole of Thailand

Is it time for some serious action like imposing a 30kph speed limit on the whole island and covering the place with traffic calming measures, it really does need some serious attention and action

They recently released road death statistics here for the ten months to 31/10/16 - 144 dead, 84% of whom were males. A whopping 80% of the dead were bike riders. And 80% of those were helmetless. A death about every two days.

It's impossible not to link these kind of statistics to the almost complete lack of a viable public transport system on Phuket. Far too many kids start riding bikes at an early age, often just to get to school. Many never ride on public transport.  Bikes become a plaything or ego booster for these immature fools. They can often be seen flat out, weaving through traffic, or lying on the road in a pool of blood.  A light rail system has been announced, who knows if it will eventuate. Also, a consortium plans a bus system servicing the city.

The real problems arn't being addressed. When they announce police crackdowns it usually just involves passive roadblocks and fine collecting. The place needs some old fashioned policing, involving mobile officers booking speeders and actively enforcing helmet and MDL rules.

The death road from the airport to the bypass turnoff particularly requires extra attention to slow the suicide jockeys and taxis.

When you get hit by a car on a bike. You pushed 3,5,7 meters ? Depending on the impact speed.

The taxi drivers story will be believed. All the guess work that the OP are saying, does not matter. Right or wrong.

Keeping guessing, if you want. But it will not matter.

Thai right,  Russian wrong, and one Russian Dead Wrong.

Yes pretty gruesome especially one report saying his foot was ripped off, and still wedged on the bike! RIP is about all one can say about the never ending carnage on the roads here!

I got into a motorcycle accident about 5 years ago. Some clown cut in front of me. I got knocked out and woke up in the hospital. No damage to the face but I had pretty good scrapes on my arms, belly and legs. Had to go a clinc every day to have the dressing changed. One day I was there and they gave me a IV and I. Was in pain. My Tgf said to give me something for the pain so they gave me shot of something through the IV tube. Man they could have cut my legs off and wouldn't have cared. Good stuff.

Went back home and saw a wound specialist. And had to cut the big scab off my arm so I wouldn't get infection. Needless to.say I. Had to.go a clinic everyday for dressing and they put this cream that contained silver on the the wounds. Hurt like hell for about a hour.

Trying make a long story short but...

Got better but developed keloids from the wounds. Looks like hell. Too much colligen in my body from what I have read. I went a motorcycle shop and bought a good riding jacket with all the protective armor in it.

Back in Thailand and I am still fearful driving here and I had a 1100cc bike before. Just too many crazy drivers for my liking.

Sorry for the long post.

Be and stay safe.

One more data point.

One guy on the scooter lost a foot, and his life.  No helmet was going to save him from losing the foot, even if he had survived.  The other guy on the scooter apparently sustained serious injuries.

The taxi driver with 4 wheels and a roof?  Minor injuries.

You guys can get all caught up about helmets and protective armor.  It's those other 2 wheels (and the roof) that will save you.

If the Russian rode anything like the local Thais, then I wouldn't be surprised if they did cut out in front of the taxi. I have had lots of bikes cut in front of me without checking and it's only because I ride/drive defensively that I can avoid running into them from the back

it seems that many Thais want to use the most direct quickest and shortest route possible to their destination even if that part of the road is already occupied, overtaking into oncoming traffic - making sudden lane changes at speed when they can't see who or what is already there, add to that the prolific use of mobiles when driving - I have witnessed 3x serious accidents (as a pedestrian) happen right in front of me caused by drivers with their heads buried in a mobile phone, I have also witnessed drivers acting careless with near misses and when I passed them .....guess what.......faces buried in a mobile phone, not even going to get into drunk driving but that is just as prolific

This madness needs to stop, the only way to deal with it is proper policing and stiff penalties for those that don't get the message
