PHUKET: -- Two Isaan men had their hair shaved off as punishment for fishing in a pond at a temple in Chalong on Sunday morning.

Kunnakorn Srikoon, 29, and Wanit Panthina, 30, were caught with fishing equipment and a turtle inside Wat Ladthiwanaram (Wat Tai) where people release fish and turtles to make merit.

Supawathakan Kunlauk of Chalong Municipality and Chalong Police officers were called to witness the punishment doled out by the temple’s abbot.

Go illegal fishing and get a free haircut.

Why such publicity for such a trivial offense ? Takes the attention off the more serious cases ?

Lucky they did not get caught at a Mosque. Where the head man is really the Head Man.

what gives those B......ds the right to do that. the guys should have went begging instead

I've seen some of these ponds at temples, the bloody fish are piled on top of each other. You could fill a trawler net!!!!

I wonder what they would have done if they had caught one of the many shaven headed farangs in Phuket fishing in the temple pool.  Perhaps they would have dyed his head purple instead.

Not exactly true. One particular, hard to find monk is very giving..........the PM a very large headache

They got a free haircut but what's the point of saying in lieu of instead of in place of?

They did, soon after getting the saffron robes  :whistling:

Yum, the intense flavour of mud to look forward to.  The use of the term "in lieu" as normally pronounced seems appropriate in the context of the story.  Would anyone swim in the pool, let alone eat anything that came out of it?  And someone once said only cockroaches would survive in a post-nuclear apocalypse world. This form of fishing is extreme survivalist training for sure.
