I just got an incoherent e-mail response from USAA bank.

Has anyone done this? What do I have to tell my US bank (in my case USAA Fed Savings Bank)? Do I need to contact Bangkok Bank at all? USAA seems clueless (to date) after I contacted them. I am still trying to get them to understand what I am doing, so perhaps they'll get a clue tonight after my latest message.
Do I simply Initiate a "domestic" [US] wire transfer from USAA to me as "recipient" (reminds me of that line from "The Freshman") with my Bangkok Bank in Thailand account number and [of course] using the Bangkok Bank NY US routing # 026008691?

I have seen many members of this forum use USAA bank to do this.  How do I make them understand? What are the magic words?

Thanks.

You first set up the account - online you select "I want to" from menu on your account you want to transfer from and select "Transfer Funds" and then on right side of that page (assuming account not set up) you click on "Add An Account".  That will be where you enter the routing/account/name and type of account (send only or some such wording).

Once account is set up it will appear as an option when you select I want to transfer funds.

Just tell tell them you want to ACH transfer to Bangkok Bank in New York should be enough. With your account number and the routing number.

No need to arrange anything with Bangkok Bank for a transfer.

Have you looked at this page on Bangkok Bank's website.

Thank you. They won't let me set up the account online. Message says to call them.

Perhaps they see the Thailand access IP so have required you call them rather than allow normal on-line setup.

In that case you may have to call during work hours in Texas rather than the middle of the night and advise you want to set up account for transfers so you can make a domestic transfer to your account at Bangkok Bank New York (have full address available) and as you know there routing and your account number.  You only want to push funds to this account (no pull).

No you should not have to contact Bangkok Bank at all unless they advise they have sent test amounts and you need to verify by calling Bangkok Bank here in Thailand.

First of all get in the mind set when accomplishng an ACH transfer to your Bangkok Bank account you just need to provide the Bangkok Bank New York routing number and your in-Thailand Bangkok Bank account number.   It's treated just like a domestic ACH transfer.   Maybe in your mind just rename Bangkok Bank New York to That Bank in New York.   Some people get wrapped all around the wheel in thinking it's handled like an international/SWIFT transfer but "it's not!"   For all practical purposes it handled just like you are transferring funds from USAA to any other bank in the U.S.

You just need to set the transfer up online.  But starting last year in order to setup a funds transfer link using USAA ibanking, you must also receive a security code to your U.S. mobile number to begin the process.   And the number you use use has to be seasoned in your USAA profile for 30 days the SMS will be sent.  If you have a Google Voice number you can use that to receive the text....it's what I use and from other TV posts I've seen they also use Google Voice to receive the SMS.   You'll be presented with below screen to enter the mobile number you want to use.

Otherwise you will need to call USAA during their business hour to discuss setting up a transfer link.   From posts I've read people have been successful in setting up the link over the phone with the USAA rep...other reps say mail in a certain USAA banking form to setup the link.

And when setting up the transfer link just set it up to "Send" money; not Send and Pull.  Send & Pull requires use of trial deposits when setting it up online....and you can not even Pull money from Bangkok Bank via the ACH link as the transaction will be rejected.  Bangkok Bank stresses that in their instructions (don't attempt a Pull) on their website about how to use the Bangkok Bank NY (That Bank in NY) ACH transfer method.

I also had a communication from USAA when I attempted to add Bangkok Bank to my list of transferees several years ago

They just read the Bangkok Bank part and did not bother to read the routing number.   Once they were reminded that it was a domestic transfer they added to my list of transfers, without, I might add, the test deposits, since the option for one way transfers (to) was checked off

BTW, this was in the days before you had to have a text enabled cell phone to add additional accounts.  I got around that problem by using Pip's suggestion to obtain a Google Voice number that acts just like a US text enabled cell phone for USAA
