I'd take a guess and say that his customer base dropped off because fewer people were going to the border for shopping etc when immigration tightened the crossing rules.

He sold the restaurant and moved back to Australia.  His daughter, Lena, is going to a university there.

Yes, Clayton.  Good guy, always pleasant.  I've stopped there a  hundred times.  He even named one of the menu dishes - using my name.

There are dozens of other places which no longer do biz in this area - which I wish were still around. I could make a partial list, but I don't want to strain my brain.  Like the expression, "only the best die young" ....that the best eat places seem to disappear too soon, from around Chiang Rai.

Who is open to starting a Mexican restaurant in Chiang Rai?  I'll donate, to help get it started.

A new oven can be bought in front of Makro for Bt.21k.  It runs on LPG and can do 6 pizzas at a time. I've been trying to get a Chinese-Thai friend of mine interested in selling either pizza-by-the-slice or simple Mexican food.  She's got an excellent location on the main road in Mae Sai, but she's not familiar with farang food, so.....

BTW, she wants to rent her shop space. It's right where dozens of giant buses full of Chinese park every day.  Anyone interested, pm me for details.
