BANGKOK: -- METROPOLITAN Police chief Sanit Mahathavorn and Thai Beverage (“ThaiBev”) have been given seven days to explain how the senior policeman reportedly earned Bt50,000 a month as an adviser to the country’s biggest producer of alcoholic drinks.

Ombudsman’s Office secretary-general Rakkecha Chaechai said the board yesterday decided to send a letter to Sanit asking if he had actually held a position as ThaiBev’s adviser, if he received a payment for advisory work, if he currently continued to receive such a payment and if he had yet resigned from the post.

Any red-shirt would be hounded to death for such a thing.

Good thing he wasn't hosting a TV cooking show.

Hopefully people won't ask questions about the QSNCC "contract", a second 25 year exclusive non-compete deal given by the "government" to ThaiBev's Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.

It is amazing that the definition of "corruption" seems to be very flexible based on one's political affiliations?

In unrelated news. Brewing Craft Beer in Thailand is completely illegal.

Anything to do with the off - chance that it it be seen as a reduction in market share / profit of a couple of major companies - nah! Didn't think so.

Seven days to fabricate a believable excuse. A half-decent copywriter should manage that - for a fee.

That's just because the first ten or so rationalizations (donation, speaker's fee, taste tester, drunk driving expertise, new brown beer recipe...) will be so flimsy they'll be laughed at by the public.

And you have to get ThaiBev's approval, which may take time.

Putting things off is always better; maybe people will forget or some other scandal will capture the public's attention. Why hurry?

Finally decided sure gave it a lot of thought. Asked if he was still receiving payment and if so had he resigned yet. You got to be kidding.

And what makes you think he is not a red shirt? Most of the police are.

This is great, I recall the story and it appears the scrutiny has come and bit the guy on the a-ss. Good to see some continuity in the news and will be interesting to see the outcome.

Don't hold your breath for any monumental outcome.

He has been appointed in 2016 under the Junta's government and is also a member of the puppet NLA.

By the way, I am surprised he is only suspected of conflict of interest as police chief. Is it considered as ethical to have law makers paid by big companies. Are there other NLA members paid by the same company?

Clear conflict of interests. Did he declare and pay his taxes on this income!

If there is no rule banning this practice there should be.

Too easy for corrupt behaviour, unbelievable except in Thailand.

How about he's got seven minutes...! Haul his ass in front of the ethics committee and tell him he has seven minutes....Oh, sorry.... No committee like that here.
