Into Myanmar from Mae-Sai

Featured Replies

I have a multi-entry visa. My daughter has a tourist visa.

In order to cross to Myanmar and stay there for up to 14 days, do we need a visa in advance? Or can we indeed get a 14 days visa at the border?

We want to go to Keng Tung. Is that as far as one can go? Do we need a permit? A guide? A driver? Or can we be left alone and travel by ourselves?

Trip is due in March-April '17.

In order of your post.

Your daughter should get a re-entry permit to allow her to re-enter Thailand as her single entry tourist visa would not permit another entry without it.

You don't need a visa in advance to enter Myanmar. You could previously get 14 days permission to stay in Myanmar. I think this still holds.

Previously anyone could travel to Keng Tung. You needed to request the correct permit from Burmese immigration. I believe that now you cannot do it yourself and require a guide. In the past you could then go on to Mong La on the Chinese border. I have done it.

Joe,

In the past, the border pass could get you to Keng Tung.

Has that been withdrawn?

Will she allowed to get back into Thailand with a 15/30 days visa? If so, that would be enough for us as we will be leaving before that anyway.

I suspect the Thai officials would spot that and not allow her to exit.
