Hi everyone,

I'm  a diabetic since about 10 years.Like most everyone else I take metformin, in my situation 2'000 mg per day. Still my sugar is always too high. Now  about a week ago, a friend of mine told me that he was prescribed by his doctor in a government hospital in Chiang Mai FORXIGA 10 mg, he has to take 1 tablet per day after breakfast and that helps him to get his sugar to between 90-140. That's what I call great.

I live in the Northeast/Surin province and I have tried everywhere to get this medicine, but without success. It's a pity that there are no online pharmacies here in Thailand.

Does anyone here know and use this medicine? Thank you in advance for any positive feedback.

Hi Dario. I have the same situation as you. About two weeks ago I posted asking for information on JANUVIA another online med for sugar control but got no response. Hopefully you get some information about ordering. I am in the Pattaya area. Good luck...Willyum

OP: You cannot get this over the counter, it is a special controlled drug and one with some potentially serious side effects. Need to get it from a doctor at a hospital.

Willyumcr: Same is true of Januvia. Also a controlled drug.

Hi Sheryl. I was told about Januvia from doctor at hospital (BPH). However very cost prohibitive. If hospital is only place to get then I am out of luck. Thanks for information.......Willyum

Try a government hospital? I'm not sure whether or not they have it, but from above posts it seems they do have Forxiga.

However even without any hospital mark-up, both Januvia and Forxiga are very expensive drugs as they are imported. But at a govt hospital will be noticeably less than at BPH.

Hi Sheryl, I was told by my friend he gets Forxiga from his doctor at a government hospital in Chiang Mai. Last time he paid for 110 tablets 6'215 Baht. He gets them in boxes of 30 tablets which retail at the hospital for 1'696 Baht = 56.50 Baht per tablet, not exactly cheap, but I understand that good health costs money. What is 1'695 Baht every 30 days when you have a disease as dangerous as diabetes? I just saw that you can buy them in India for 1'210 Rp. per box = 630 Baht, but you have to pay for shipping and they might be confiscated by the Thai Royal customs at arrival in Thailand.

Sheryl, what are the potentially serious side effects of Forxiga? I haven't read of any yet. I used to buy Actos 15 mg (pioglitazone) but I stopped it, because I read of side effects for people with heart problems and I am one of them..

I think that Januvia and Forxiga might be approximately the same price. In India they are priced approximately the same.

Now, I know that Forgix is not available in Surin province where I live (I haven't tried Surin hospital which is mighty big!). Since Forxiga is only sold with a prescription, how would you suggest me to proceed? Ask a doctor at my local government hospital for a prescription and then travel around  to find a hospital which has them?

PS: I have just read about the side effects here: https://www.drugs.com/cdi/dapagliflozin.html

Go to the government provincial hospital and consult a doctor there. If he agrees that the drug is appropriate for you he will prescribe it. Obviously, bring with you complete records of your current meds, blood sugars, Hb1Ac etc

Forxiga greatly increases the excretion of sugar in the urine. This in turn causes substantial fluid losses. Dehydration leading to blood blood pressure (even circulatory collapse), electrolyte imbalance and urinary tract infections and genital candida (due to the sugar in the urine, which promotes bacterial and fungal growth) are all side effects.

Thanks Sheryl, kind of scares me now when reading of the (lots) of side effects. What did you mean you wrote, I quote: 'Dehydration leading to blood blood pressure (even  circulatory collapse)? Did you mean Low blood pressure?

In the past I've had no problem buying Januvia at a Bangkok pharmacy without prescription.  I then switched to Trajenta which is used in a similar way for type 2 diabetes.  That I can still get without prescription - not only from the large pharmacy, but also from a small one in a local shopping mall.  Both cost around 1,600 baht for 30 tablets.

Hi Oxx, thanks for your much appreciated contribution. Brings in another player to the arena.

Do you feel any side effects using Trajenta? I think the correct name is Tradjenta. Possible side effects are stated here: https://www.drugs.com/tradjenta.html. If the link doesn't work, copy and paste the link in a new browser.

No side effects.

Tradjenta is the USA name.  In other countries (including Thailand) it's Trajenta.

And the reason for switching from Januvia to Trajenta is a personal (and quite possibly irrational) one:  I prefer to avoid medication containing Fluorine atoms.

Lots of good information on here. My GF just brought Januvia here in Pattaya at pharmacy over the counter. Possibly as we buy other meds there so they sold to her. They did ask if doctor recommended this drug. Cost was 1,900 for 28 pills. I will try for 28 days to see if numbers come down. I checked with Dr. at BPH and also with my doctor in USA and was told to try. I might add that Dr. BPH recommended Vanuvia before trying Forxiga but no reason given. If this does not work I will probably have to go on insulin which I really wish to avoid.

Hi Oxx,

a few days ago I sent you a PM, probably you haven't seen it. Can you please respond. I would like to buy one box of Trajenta, but it isn't available where I live.

Your local pharmacist should be able to order it. Actually - is able to. Trick will be convincing them to. If you indicate you may buy a large quantity/use it regularly, will help. Also helps to provide the pharmacist with the details needed to place the order, which are:

Drug Name: Trajenta FC tab 5 mg (packs of 30 tablets)

Distributor: Zuellig
8-9 Fl, Ploenchit Center
2 Sukhumvit Rd
Kwaeng Klongtoey
Khet Klongtoey Bangkok 10110

tel.png Tel: (+66) 2656 9800

fax.png Fax: (+66) 2656 9801

You could also try this mail order service. Whle Trajenta is nto showing on their online list, in my experience they are sometimes able to obtain additional medications given the necessary specifications:

Try Mr Medicine in Bangkok(Bangna) on 086 3036815, they are cheaper than the hospital pharmacies and seem to have a huge stock.
