PHUKET: Forty four Italian and French tourists were rescued yesterday after a speedboat crashed into an underwater concrete pole about a hundred meters away from shore.

The boat, named Ao Ja Sira, left the Gypsy Pier behind the Westin Siray Bay resort in Rassada at about 10am. The crash occurred less than five minutes into the journey.

A passing tourist boat, the Anurak 9, helped rescue everyone on board.

He hit a concrete mooring point, complete with buoy, 500 metres from his port!

Didn't see it!

Another competent boat skipper in charge of tourist's lives.

Another example of why I said in the other thread, I hope anyone planning to use the new Pattaya to Hua Hin ferry service is a capable swimmer....

In this case, very lucky that the boat was only a short distance off-shore when the mishap occurred.

I have often been anchored in the bay and have had those lunatic speedboat rocket by in total disregard of navigation regulations and common sense so this is nothing unexpected.

Concrete mooring points must be very similar to electric poles.  They just appear out of nowhere.

44 people on that thing?
What a horrible journey for all. Over crowded for the all mighty baht.

“We have yet to learn why the concrete structure is there. We will investigate further and question the boat captain, Mr Thawit Lakoh, to get more information,” Phuket Marine Office chief Surat Sirisaiyas told the Phuket Gazette.

Such a big sea, so many things to do, so little time. :coffee1:

Thanks for nitpicking!

I was actually quoting from another news source.

"PHUKET: A total of 44 Italian and French passengers departing Phuket were rescued from a sinking speedboat after the boat slammed into a concrete mooring block 500 meters from shore off Koh Siray yesterday morning (Feb 17)."
