Optic disc problem.

Featured Replies

A red flag is raised each time I have an eye test, and I am referred to a specialist for tests, usually pressure test, optic field (the one where you press a button when you see lights flash), and a close examinaton of the eye. I don't have high eye pressure, and my field of vision is fine.  There is no immediate problem like narrow angle glaucoma.

The problem appears to be the optic disc in my left eye is rather enlarged. The rim appears thin. The optic nerve exits at a strange angle, yet is not compromised. I am left without any diagnosis or clue as to what the problem is, eg, you have glaucoma.  My guess is there should be a problem but in actuality there isn't. To paraphrase: 'Whilst there is no cause for concern, the characteristic is generally associated with someone much older (even though I'm 55).  Moreover, it was first spotted aged 40.  It may have been this way for some time before, as I remember even at the age of 22 the optometrist getting rather agitated at something he'd spotted.

No diagnosis is ever given.  I don't like to press, because the doctors I have seen have been very competent and I don't suppose it is really my place to know the full ins and outs. The advice is to get photos taken every few months, and be aware that I am at higher risk of NAG.

I did a bit of googling but the information available is rather mind boggling for a layman to understand.

I was just wondering if anyone can shed any light on what an actual diagnosis could be.
