Hi all,

Currently filling in MN1 form to register my daughter's UK citizenship by descent, I seem to remember having to go to VFS Global office in Bangkok to send it off and pick up for my son a few years ago. However, the form guide just states to send directly off to UK.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Indeed, in Chapter 5 where to send the form of the guide to filling in the form it says on page 32

Quote

If they are elsewhere, including in a Commonwealth country, you must send them to:

Department 1

UKVI

The Capital

New Hall Place

Liverpool L3 9PP

As that guide is dated January 2017, I think it's up to date.

What is the advantage in doing this, rather than just applying for a UK passport?

If the child is already British; not only is there no advantage in doing this; it can't be done. You cannot register someone as British if they are already British!

He hasn't said, but I assume the OP's child is not currently British; probably because he, himself, is British by descent and so cannot automatically pass his British citizenship onto his children if they are born outside the UK or a qualifying territory.

hitthegroundrunning, if you are, in fact, British not by descent, for example because you were born in the UK or a qualifying territory and at least one of your parents is British, then your child is probably already British and if so you do not register her as such; simply apply for a British passport for her.

You can use this tool to check her status if you're not sure. Remember that you are answering the questions on your daughter's behalf.

Just a matter of interest: Does your child need to get registered as a British citizen before applying for a British passport if she is a British citizen by descent?

See 7by7's reply above.  If the British parent is British "otherwise than by descent" (i.e. born in the UK or qualifying territory), then just apply for the British passport for the child.

Thanks all, sorry for the very late reply.

Yes, I was not born in the UK so I have to apply for my daughters British citizenship.

7by7, appreciate the advice, I missed that page!

Although you were not born in the UK, if you were later registered as a British citizen and have the certificate you may be able to get your daughter a passport. I was born in Rhodesia and became British when I was 8. I was able to get my son, born in Thailand, a UK passport. Admittedly this might have been due to Rhodesia being under British law at the time of my birth.

Good luck.
