Sun loungers to return to all Phuket beaches

PHUKET: -- Sun loungers will be allowed back on Kata Beach from tomorrow (Mar 3) and later will be allowed back onto all nine Phuket beaches with “10% vendor zones”, Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan has told The Phuket News.

However, as with Patong, where sun loungers were allowed to return to the sand on Monday (Feb 27), the loungers must remain inside the 10% zones, Gov Chockchai warned.

“For now the sun loungers are allowed back on the beaches. There are no changes to any of the other beach rules – for example alcohol and food vendors must remain inside the 10% zones,” he added.

Gov Chockchai asserted that the return of the sun loungers was a “trial”, but gave no hint as to any deadline for the trial to come to an end.

He also claimed that the return of the sun loungers came with his approval, though attempts by Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebup to bring the beach chairs back were shot down at every turn late last year.

The sun loungers were allowed back onto Patong Beach on Monday only after Maj Gen Pornsak Poonsawat, Deputy Commander of Royal Thai Army Region 4, the military unit responsible for all of Southern Thailand, gave his direct consent without any provincial officials present.

“I permitted this trial in Phuket. The sun loungers is only a trial. This week, the sun loungers’ trial has been approved for two of nine beaches in Phuket,” Gov Chockchai told The Phuket News yesterday (Mar 1).

The cynic in me thinks this was the plan all along,

1. Ban sunbeds/alcohol/food.

2. Strict military enforcement.

3. Wait appropriate length of time.

4. Award sunbed/alcohol/food concessions to "selected" individuals.

I offer no comment as to how the individuals were "selected", but I think we all have our suspicions.

Unfortunately it was only going to be a matter of time. The beaches will degenerate rapidly from 10 percent and the situation will end up worse than before as the beach mafias will see that jai yen yen has allowed them to get away with things yet again . Just a sign of Mafia Phuket holding the winning hand.

I don't have an issue with the beach chairs if the ten percent zones could be maintained but sadly they wont be.

Be careful what you wish for.

Edit- reading the full article it makes mention of the fact that the 'purge' of officials in Kata just seems to have melted away- is anyone surprised? Same thing happened in Patong when Pian died- no further mention of the son being investigated.

Chairs are back, hopefully European tourists will be, too

Just wonder if it has been big envelopes who made this happen or some real understanding of the market... ?

Waiting for the lottery ticket prices to increase and that's the junta's two main achievements up the swanee.

Corruption goes back to full power.

The administration are liars and  have lost the last feeble excuse they used to justify the imposition of military rule.
