Aspirin 500 mg tablets - have they been banned in Thailand ?

My pharmacist has no shortage of 81mg aspirin strips. But she no longer has any other type.

I don't think my doctor (GP) of many moons ago was referring to these when he advised patients to "take two aspirin and call me in the morning," --- a remedy that often worked.

There was a scare here a few years ago that children could contract Reye's Syndrome if exposed to high-dose aspirin. Health officials and at least one minister muttered about banning it as a preventive measure and the Thai press covered it in an alarmist fashion. I don't know if that caused its disappearance.

The 500 mg Aspirin disappeared long ago and Bayer are not selling them in Thailand any more. I have also noticed that in the UK you can only buy 300 mg tablets these days.

You can get 300 mg Aspirin, I've seen the brands 'Aspent' whcih come in bottles of 1000 tablets and 'Ascot 300' which come in silver packs of 5 strips. Both of these brands are enteric coated tablets.

If your pharmacy doesn't have them tell them the brand name and they should be able to order them for you.

I've found that when asking for aspirin for some reason they seem to assume that I only want the Bayer brand. One pharmacist who I've asked about aspirin availability maybe 10 times over the course of a year (approximately once a month) had a large bottle of 1000 x 300 mg Aspent sitting on her shelf for this entire period of time yet she continuously told me that she can't get Aspirin and had none.

One day I told her that any generic brand of Aspirin would be ok and it doesn't need to be 500 mg, 300 mg would be just fine. I then showed her a list of brands available in Thailand which I printed out from somewhere on this forum and it turns out that she had the Aspent 300 mg in stock all along.

So I'd been asking for a whole year and this pharmacist had the product I wanted in a lesser dose but didn't consider it was worth mentioning to me.

That kind of almost nearly makes sense....but at the same time makes you wonder about the mindset/knowledge of the pharmacist !
