recomantions for GPS unit for cars

Featured Replies

Just bought a new car and I'm looking to buy a car mounted GPS unit

baring suggestions to use Google, what are the best English

software units out there?

Buy a Garmin, you can take it with you wherever you go.

Depends on what you want. There are hundreds of programs out there BUT most of them are made by GPS wholesalers, ie you buy one of their units and pay them annual subscription. I attached couple of screenshots,  this is what program I install for my customers looks like on their phones.

Also bear in mind that different models offer different functions, from basic tracking to security options like engine cut off and even voice monitoring.

I think the OP meant GPS Navigation Head Unit not a GPS tracker.. Even though would love for you to pm me on the details of your systems.

I bought a garmin for my car, a cheap LM version of the garmin would suffice, with free maps update for lifetime (or at least till the device dies). I also keep my phone with a dash mount for city driving.. My garmin comes into play mostly when I'm leaving bangkok or to places I know internet can be sketchy.

I prefer software which will work offline. I use HERE Maps or MAPS.me, the first one being the sequel of Nokia Maps, the other one using OpenStreetMaps. Both are working quite well, but HERE does not have maps for China/Hong Kong. Download the maps (in both cases) while you are at home on your WiFi and you are ready to go. Updates for the maps are regular and available for free!

Give both of them a try, it's free. Links given below.

HERE Maps

MAPS.me

Google Maps has improved a lot over the last few months. The absolute best with it is the really quick way to search engine to find your destination, and real time traffic and alternative routes etc. It also has offline. Products like Garmin etc just feel like they belong in a previous century. Even my BMW navigation system can't keep up anymore.

TomTom Android app gives you three years of worldwide use for 1700B after a 75km free trial.

I also have a stand-alone Garmin Nuvi with Thai/Malaysia/Singapore map that I bought a few years ago for 4000B.

Both seem to do the trick. The main problem with these things is maps going out of date, so in that respect I prefer the Android app.

Depends how often you want to use it and for what duration of time.

I just use my phone and "sygic" maps.Download the country or region you want, works offline, even has a HUD  (heads up display in windscreen) if you want.

Dont have the need for additional box in the car. Personal preference really.

Phone can double as a dash cam whilst in use too, so another item less to worry about.

I have a cheap Garmin unit that has free map updates. It is much better and easier to use than my 2015 Isuzu OEM in dash unit. Using Google maps on my phone is just simply aggravating for me. My next GPS will also be a Garmin.

Just returned from our annual beach hols, 2700km road trip, I personally find the route signage on roads good here, a map, compass and keeping an eye on the sun useful too. I had my smartphone with Google maps on every stage of the journey, good now with informing you of many road works on AH2 and getting us to the hotels I had booked. The GPS signal lost a few times on the drive across the hills, R4006 to Ranong coast line, one of the most scenic of routes.

On my g maps I have this posh English bird talking the instructions, I did ask her out, but told me to take the next u-turn.
