Thailand to implement Alcohol sale stores following Scandinavian concept.

 

 

BANGKOK:-- Since many outlets ignore the sale ban between midnight-11am and 2pm-5pm the government is starting state funded alcohol outlets.

 

In a raft of measures in line with the government's desire to reduce alcohol related crime and health issues spokeswoman Praewphan Ponhpaiboon announced at a press briefing that the government will implement an alcohol sales policy similar to the Swedish "System Bolaget"  wherein alcohol is only sold in designated stores. 

 

All alcohol sale will forbidden in other stores. There will be one outlet in every Ampur, so none have to worry about access to alcohol.

 

She went on to say that citizens will only be able to use the store located in the Ampur where they are registered on a tabien baan, foreigners will need to provide their passport along with their latest immigration address report and are again only permitted to use the store in their registered area.

 

There will be heavy penalties for those buying in bulk in order to re-sell on the black-market and limits will be set on the maximum single purchase although she did not elaborate on the potential sales limit.

 

She also stated that the system could be expanded in future to cover other potentially harmful substances such as ED drugs like Viagra and its generic equivalents.

 

Tenders are being invited from potential store operating companies who will be expected to implement the system in time for it to begin at the same time as the new exercise taxes on alcohol starts Oct 1st.

That sounds fair. The authorities are obviously aware that Thais are more able to handle their liquor.

Going after the private business sectors profits and ensuring the tax collection. Didn't they talk about state run grocery stores coming awhile back?
What's the political name for a society where the state operates all the enterprises like gas,electricity,water,transportation etc.?

It all started back at school when they failed to get a fair education because of the system, which hasn't changed since back then, so you have to give them credit for trying, "the wheels on the bus go round and round"

 

This should be implmented immeadiately .........today in fact

In the late 1970s, I visited a friend in Bombay (as it was then). He told me that, in order to buy alcohol, it was necessary to be registered as an alcoholic. Since he and his family were muslim and I had far better things to do than go on the booze on an 'exotic' holiday, it wasn't an issue. I've often wondered whether or not he was pulling my leg.

 

I wouldn't be surprised to hear of something similar in Thailand - or is this another April Fools 'joke'? 

 

EDIT - If true, this could be the death knell for the likes of 'Wishbeer' who deliver to your door.

Nonsense this is true. The one they are building near Rachatewi in Bangkok is a drive through, no need to leave the car! 

We know the date and significance of it. If the Thai government see's this it may give them ideas!

Sounds like australian idea more than swedish. Drive through bottle shops

So the Government will have  full control over what is sold and at what prices,

I dont think that Makro,Big C,Tesco will be overjoyed by this,unless they  are 

the ones to operate the monopoly's in each Ampur. 

 

I dont consume alcohol, but it looks like Thailand whats to be the nanny state Hub

of S.E. Asia.

More chance of catching the Abbot and the Red Bull fugitive. It is beyond me that the authorities go public with these hair brain schemes and announcements without any diligence or thought! The Great Thailand Prohibition!

Well my shop has an alcohol licence, so it is to be cancelled thereby removing some of our family income and giving it to some big corporation?

 

I don't think this has a chance in hell of being actually implemented.

The state of Utah had this type of alcohol control in the 1960s/70s.

Yes! Ban prostitution, water throwing on Song Kran, and now ban alcohol so we can truly enjoy Thailand. 555 (Hey, fearless leaders, "leave it alone")

Will exceptions to the maximum purchase limit be granted for registered alcoholics?

Alberta had this system in the 80's. Maybe still has..

It still has it today. 

The State of New Hampshire handles sale of all but beer and wine that way. Actually the New Hampshire State stores draw a lot of out state traffic because they are tax exempt and prices are quite reasonable. We usually shop there rather than at the airport duty free shop before coming to Thailand. 

 

Other thoughts, if passed as written above, the need for 7/11's in Thailand would be reduced by a third. 

 

And imagine the competition to get the license to run/profit from the one and only liquor shop in the Ampur. 

There just maybe another coup to stop this government from continuing to make sudden/drastic changes at the drop of a hat

WOULD BE BETTER TO -- LOWER THE SPEED LIMIT, Introduce a 0 tolerance on public holidays.

Privatising the sale of alcohol to a privileged few is what this so called government is preaching is not going to happen across the board..

The seven /11 and all others will never bow to this stupid idea.

It would create anarchy , owe sorry we already have that. 

I believe they are the only ones also who will be stocking the products from the Italian spaghetti trees!
