Young Thai woman embraced by nation remains in coma

BANGKOK: -- The 25-year-old Thai woman transported from South Korea to Thailand after suffering a heart attack remains in a coma but is in a stable condition at Bangkok-based Rajavithi Hospital, according to Department of Medical Services chief Dr Theerapol Topanthanont.

 

Theerapol said Rapeeporn "Min" Nasa-arn still suffered convulsions and symptoms of acute kidney failure because she had suffered a heart attack which deprived her of oxygen to brain and blood to the kidneys. 

 

He said Rajavithi Hospital would cover her medical expenses beyond what was covered by her Social Security Office subscription, as her condition required expensive medical care.

 

He urged Thais travelling abroad to have travel insurance in case they required urgent medical treatment.

 

Thanarat Choon-ngam, head of Rajavithi Hospital's Department of Medicine, said Rapeeporn required respiratory aid and anti-convulsant drugs while her kidneys were recovering. 

 

He said she still had a fever and an abnormal heart rhythm, which might require the insertion of a cardiovascular implantable electronic device.

 

Thanarat said her cardiac arrest might have resulted from a conduction disorder as there was no evidence indicating that chemotherapy used to treat her lymphoma a decade ago had led to her heart failure.

 

He said her valvular heart disease was diagnosed and corrected and she had a mild case of her cardiac muscles being unable to close properly. 

 

Doctors are waiting to see how her brain recovers before making a prediction on her recovery. 

 

During her trip to South Korea in late March, the Thai Chamber of Commerce University graduate had a heart attack and fell into a coma. 

 

She was initially treated at a South Korean hospital. 

 

Her relatives in Kalasin province asked for help because the medical expenses are very high, resulting in various agencies teaming up to bring her home.

 

Rapeeporn's mother Bang-orn Nasa-arn thanked everyone for their help and expressed hope her daughter will recover.

 

She said some of the donated money had gone to the South Korean hospital that treated her daughter while the rest would be used to repay the Consulate-General Department and used for her further medical treatment.

Its nice to hear the hospital is not giving up on her because of money. It was interesting to see that like the liver the kidneys to can recover as well. She is young and I wish her luck.
