Is it common practice that students be allowed to view a surgery or procedure or should the patient's expressed consent be needed, not buried in a contract?

It is common practice in all teaching hospitals for students and interns/residents to observe surgeries and procedures - not only in Thailand, but worldwide.

It is also common practice for other physicians to view if there is something particularly interesting/unusual about it - again, everywhere. This will usually only occur in more unusual/medically intersting cases or where a new technique is being used.

I don't know what you mean by a "contract".  Patient's consent is not required anywhere that I am aware of. Of course, during surgery the patient will be well draped and usually only the operative field will be visible to observers.

Thank you Sheryl - I had no objection to it and if asked would have given consent... by contract, I merely meant whatever form they had me sign before doing a procedure.
