Passenger van operators told to remove excess seats

BANGKOK: -- Passenger vans operators on fixed routes must remove excess seats to meet the 13-seat limit or face a Bt5,000 fine and a licence suspension. The new requirement came into effect on Tuesday.

 

Deputy Transport Minister Pichit Akkharathit said the new law covered 15,808 passenger vans registered nationwide.

 

The deadline to comply with the new is Tuesday.

 

Van operators who fail to comply with the law could have their licence suspended for up to six months.

 

The measure has been enforced prior to the Songkran Festival when score of people flow out of Bangkok to celebrate the Thai traditional New Year in their hometowns.

Minivan change to 13-seaters: operators not allowed to increase prices, says ministry

BANGKOK: -- The communications ministry has said that the reduction in seating capacity in minivans is not an excuse to charge more to the travelling public.

 

Prices will remain the same as any changes to pricing structure depend on the prevailing price of gas not the number of seats in a vehicle, reported Thai Trath.

 

Phichit Akkarathit, a communications' ministry official, was speaking yesterday after the public voiced concerns that prices would rise as a result of the new measure designed to enhance safety.

 

Phichit also said that 100 of operational vans were now fitted with the required GPS systems though some vehicles not being used currently were still being adapted.

 

He said the ministry had no plans to raise prices at this time.

Does the 13 seat limit include the driver seat? Simple logic would say yes but nothing in the LOS is simple or logical.

They will just drive faster to squeeze in an extra trip to make up for lost seats

No they will not drive faster because that has been taking care off.

All the ones i have seen on the road the last few days and the ones i travelled in last week do not go over 90kmh.

Great improvement.

How will that be policed in villages where they pay drivers to take over loaded vans of kids to school?

I think that's all vans and not vans that are run commercialy as taxi

I am sure the number 100 is not correct,i read a different number elsewhere,could it be 100%?

 

Create any law you like, just try to get someone to enforce it is impossible.

Now the government interfering in pricing and therefore supply and demand  I seem to recall something about rice and rubber!!

A Cost Accountant will tell you that the minivan business is profitable only to the route principal(s). The van owner/driver is on a quick road to bankruptcy...

No problem... you can cram more people in without the excess seats.

Why were they allowed to put the so called extra seats in the vans? The vans come with the allowed seating ,The Law/government let them get away with this extra seat scam for years.Remember ,Safety first or is that Greed?

Most of the vans are commercial vans and then carpet, windows,as many seats as you want and seat belts are added after market its half the price compared to genuine people movers that have side airbags with the whole seating area beefed up and that's why they are so deadly, the side intrusion bars are designed for boxes, not humans.

Maybe the   "extra "  seating  means  the  fold up  stools  extracted  from under the regular  seating? That is  after  squeezing  5 people  into  regular seating  for  3.

The  seat belt  thing is  maybe  having a  good impact overall?
