KHON KAEN: -- A nurse told police that she had nudged the driver of an ambulance after she noticed that he had dropped off at the wheel.

The driver came round startled and in a panic wrenched the steering wheel round, lost control and glanced off a large tree, reported Thai Rath.

The Ban Phai hospital ambulance ended up on its side on the Ban Phai - Khon Kaen bypass.

The driver and two nurses were on their way back to Ban Phai hospital after delivering a patient to Khon Kaen hospital yesterday afternoon.

The three occupants of the vehicle were only slightly injured - and were taken back to their own hospital for observation.

Driver Yuthana Baibong, aged about 40, told police that he had been on duty since morning and this was his second run of the day. He had felt very tired, he said.

Police said they would let the injured recover before continuing their investigations.

When will people here understand that driving when you are really tired is as dangerous as driving when you are drunk?

This guy scrapes people up off the road for a job, so you would like to think he should be a bit more aware of the dangers.

Presumably in another ambulance? I hope they recover as well as the injured ambulance.

The driver stated that he had been on duty too long and was tired................................................ OK then.

so a ambulance driver does not know how to drive.

next time let him sleep, :cheesy: take the wheel, shift the trans into neutral or 2nd and coast to a stop.

Luckily, an ambulance was nearby....it just had to be helped up on to its wheels. :coffee1:

Judging by the photo, the accident must have happened during the day, so working since the morning he should have been at his peak performance. If he fell asleep, one should ask what was he doing during the night? Boozing with his mates, poking his geek?

There must be some variation on phrase "Physician, heal thyself" we could come up with..... help me out folks

Hi Emster23 The only thing I can come up with is that my g/f's mother has a witch doctor on speed dial.

Not me If i get sick i get the wife to drive me to hospital or if i can i will walk Suspend the driver that is the action that should be taken But that wont happen so keep smiling Besides they will need him to pick up all the dead bodies  from car accidents over songkran

It doesn't say that he was on duty too long in the news article, does it?

  • got on duty in the morning
  • accident in the afternoon
  • did two trips that day

The article does not say at what time in the morning he got on duty and at what time in the afternoon the accident happened. It also does not say if the driver was allowed to rest between the trips, and whether he works on another job when he is not on duty at the hospital or engages in other activities that might cause him not to get enough rest between his tours of duty.

The number of deaths over Somgkran pretty much equates to the daily total all year round. I think it is around 70 or 80 per day. If the Songkran figure is lower then it makes sense to have the same enforcement throughout the year, So sleepy or not the rescue guys have a lot of work.

the classic ''over steer''i know it well..but...i have seen some of these paramedics and I will say this, they looked like they were about 17,there is more to search and rescue than hustling the nurses and texting o you phone....a country of children, policed by children ,run by children...could we expect any other outcome...sawadee no crap

I also once fell asleep for maybe 2 seconds on the highway some years ago , I knew I had pushed myself over the limit and stopped the car , when you wake up the last thing to do is to  "wrench the steering wheel"  , no need to panic unless there is danger .  I took a break for 15 minutes . had a coffee and felt fine again .
