webfact
PM calls for nightclub age restrictions enforcement BANGKOK, 24 April 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has called for a stricter enforcement of age restrictions at entertainment venues, preventing persons under 20 years of age from entering, in the wake of violations by many venue owners, says a spokesman. The Government Spokesman, Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd has disclosed that the Prime Minister had ordered police, military, and administration officials to strictly regulate entertainment venues to adhere to age restrictions, alcohol sale time, licences, and the prevention of narcotics use. The order was issued in the wake of reported violations at many venues. “The Prime Minister was informed that many clubs and bars allow children and youths to enter, which could affect their safety, as some venues are places for alcohol consumption which may lead to abuses and violence. “Recent searchs at DJ Zone and Vientiane clubs in Pathum Thani has shown the clubs allow persons younger than 20 years old to enter, and the two clubs have violated many laws by not having appropriate licenses, selling alcohol to children, opening beyond the allowed time, and being a hiding place for drugs,” the government spokesman said. He added the Prime Minister had ordered the authorities to ensure no officials are involved with any benefits some operators might offer, and to strictly enforce the law without tolerance of any violation of the law, and asking parents to keep their eyes on their children and advise them not to behave in improper ways. -- nnt 2017-04-

Thechook
Might upset a lot of tourists. 18 yr old can drink and party at clubs in Australia and many travel to Thailand and not being allowed into clubs is going to hurt.
HiSoLowSoNoSo
Why not close all night clubs? they have already banned many things that made Thailand a funny place to visit. If this new moralistic "government" will stay in power for long time, many Thais will lose their jobs.

yellowboat
The age of adulthood and the drinking age in Thailand is 20 years old. For once, the general is making some sense from a legal perspective. What is the legal age for working at night clubs ? Use to clean tables, wash glasses and sweep the floors at these venues. prakhonchai nick
Legally married at 18, can work in a club or bar at 18, can be bar-fined at 18, but cannot drink until 20. Rather strange. kingstonkid
When I was growing up in the stone age the drinking age was 21 in the US and 18 in Canada. Most f us that were 17 knew the risks and took the chances that our fake ID would get us in. Clubs should be checking for age appropriate ID all all people. Letting a 16 yearold or younger go into a club and party and drink is never a good thing. Also looking at the maturity leve of most young Thais I would suggest that it should be raised to 30 in clubs if you are Thai so that you have the maturity to take responsibility for your actions. I would love to know how many in Onyx and these other big clubs are UA. If I was the general I would do a sweep of RCA on a Friday or Saturday night. Penalties Shut down that night for first ofense Closed for 2 weeks and 1 milion baht for second Closed of a month and 1 milion baht for 3d Closed permanenetly for a 4th OH yeah and closed means closed padlocks on doors no renavating or anything allowed to happen For the kds 1.000 baht fine and barred from all clubs easy to do just set up a computer program for all clubs to check id second offence 10,000 o 2 days in jail 3rd offense 100,000 or one week 4th 1 month in jail and permanent ban from all drinking establishments Drugs over DUI ;eve; Jail and then rehab not properly licensed CLOSED
jmccarty
Better yet, a drinking license (similar to the UAE) should be required for anyone to consume alcohol anywhere in Thailand. The police should issue these to people over the age that the police think is appropriate for each person. This will definitely work with no problem to anyone, tourists can just include this in their list of things to do while visiting Thailand. All part of the fun and happiness! Not if they implement ID scanning (chip -> internet -> return biometrics data including picture) -- and mandatory ID checks on all that enter. Anyone not complying would therefore have their licenses revoked and their businesses closed permanently. It is not that difficult.... if that is really what they wanted..... they could just take a zero tolerance approach. Note: Personally, I think the drinking age should be 16 [with conditions], 18 to enter night clubs and purchase alcohol.

mtls2005
It seems odd that the Prime Minister of a country is concerning himself with such minor, mundane issues? The need to issue orders seemingly hourly, and involve himself in the minutiae of daily life is astounding.
brewsterbudgen
The legal age to drink and buy alcohol in Thailand is 18. There is a separate law that restricts entry to nightclubs to people aged 20+.

Ummm.... given the road death rate for drunk motorcyclists etc, the youth/college gang shootings, teen pregnancy rate and general safety of the community I suggest that you are incorrect in considering these issues mundane. As for minor, maybe your syntax is incorrect 'cos at 18 years of age you are still a minor in Thailand. If your syntax is correct, then para 1 applies, amending the last word of the para!!! Not sure how enforcing the age limit of 20 at night clubs addresses any of your "issues", especially if alcohol can be purchased elsewhere at age 18? And why does the PM need to tell anyone to enforce the the law? Shouldn't they already be doing that as part of their job(s)? And what good does simply issuing order do? Do you honestly believe that the hourly and daily issuance of orders somehow solves any problems here? "You will reconcile now, or else." Alcohol abuse, and its many effects, is a significant issue which requires a multi-pronged program to address: education, health, society, family. I guess some view this sort or paternalistic pontification from on high as "governing"? But suspect the masses just ignore all these orders. Could drink but not have a bit of the other or could have a bit of the other but not a beer or could not do anything, 18 to 21 years of age. Couldn't legally have beer at a country side barbie unless you put up a tent, ie your abode. Couldn't stand at some bars and drink, had to be seated, couldn't carry your beer from one table to another, had to ask the staff to do it. ???
