I also think that Thailand is changing for the better .

Its no longer a place where mid aged adults can come to go through a mid life crisis and act like 20 year olds

The Western bar owners are pimps (as are the Thai bar owners who have a a barfine system) , although they would never admit it .

Its a pleasure to see the bar owners suffering , all those padded bills , pills popped into drinks , colusion with the bar staff to rip customers off .

Think that they have a god given right to flout the laws of Thailand, just because they pay off the Police .

A front for prostitution , ripping off customers, paying off corrupt Police .

Good riddance

Thailand is changing for the better ?  You can now get 15 years in jail for pressing 'like' on Facebook.

I did mean that generally, I didnt mean that every single aspect of Thailand is changing for the better

The entire area (Nana) is going thru a transition/modernization.  Hooter's plus several newer/remodeled venues. I don't like it much.  Takes away from the grittiness/culture of the area I think.  Still some older haunts but we will see.

Last nite I visited some of my old haunts on Sukhumvit and Nana. I have not been in awhile. I noticed there not nearly as many people in Nana Plaza and the street itself .

Later I walked down to Soi 7 .1 Bangkok Beat is gone,  BJ's is gone along with all the massage shops.

Bangkok is not nearly as much  fun as it was just a year or two ago.

If the government wants to stop the flow of tourists they are achieving their goal

Perhaps they realize that a small group of one kind of tourist is driving off or keeping away big groups of other kinds...  I know lots of families back home who refuse to take a holiday to Thailand because of its reputation for in-your-face debauchery..

Very stupid of them. You are right it is the reputation but easy to avoid it 1000's of hotels and things to do away from the debauchery.

I work with a guy from Pakistan that shows me absolutely gorgeous photos he took in his home town area.  So beautiful that he almost has me convinced that I should spend some holiday time in Pakistan, in spite of its reputation.

Almost.

Contrary to popular belief- Thailand is not hurting for tourism per se- it is the type of tourists that are changing and the type of tourists that are being targeted-

-The single Western tourist is no longer wanted in Thailand as the powers that be believe this is the type of person who comes for the sex scene and causes problems that become magnified in the media. They tighten the Immigration/Visa rules and believe this type of tourist will then go elsewhere.   In their minds- this diminishes  the patronage of  a Soi Cowboy and nana Plaza as well as Pattaya- and eventually these type of establishments will decline and either go out of business or relocate.

-the rising land prices in Bangkok ad Pattaya are dooming the entertainment  areas as the owners can no longer afford rising rents coupled with the government increasing excise taxes on alcohol and a decrease in business.  Patpong will be the exception due to its long standing location and  one owner who has owned the area for many decades.  In addition, one is seeing more and more Western style Pubs- like Hooters etc with their accompanying higher prices which will cater to a different type of tourist.

- When one walks the streets of Bangkok/Pattaya one sees less Western tourists and many more Chinese and Middle Eastern families- none of these people are interested in the bar scene as well as middle class and Hi So Thais- again-not interested in the bar scene that used to attract Westerners.

- Both Bangkok and Pattaya are building more 5 star hotels and boutique shops and shopping malls.  These places involve a huge investment and they need a large customer base to recover. I have always said- follow the money- which means they expect more tourists -both domestic or foreign to recover that investment. (Chinese ; Asean)

- As the economy advances and ASEAN becomes more integrated- more and more Thais will opt for education over entertainment and the places that were once so popular will lose their basic customer base.  There will always be all night entertainment - it will be less than before and will not be as obtrusive as now- you just have to look harder for it.

Apparently some Thais believe that Bangkok would better if it was more like Singapore.

Singapore realised being squeaky clean was dissuading potential visitors and they relaxed the rules many years ago.

Did you know that prostitution is legal in Singapore? Always has been far as I know. Certainly was in the 70s, but out of sight.

Wow we have another genius suggestion here of hitting up the clubs at 5pm lol. Yeah you do that if you want but you're gonna have to commit a crime and break into the club as don't they usually open at the earliest around 8pm or 9pm anyway?

And no you're wrong, I don't need to worry about traffic or finishing work/school late & rushing home to shower and eat but thanks for trying to predict what I would say next :)

bbi1. Read again. 'Out for drink/socialise preclub 3 or 4 hours'. Guess you missed that part. If you want to break into a club at 5 pm go ahead an be my guest.

Just try reading the full thing first and you would see the bit about deciding one over the other and prioritising.

Have a fabulous day, or try at least.

Party loving tourists will vote with their feet on the night life in Thailand I know several couples from my next door town in the UK who have always went to Thailand for their annual long haul holiday but this year they went to Cambodia and gave a blow by blow account on Facebook about the fun and party time in Cambodian, this was after the announcement that the Songkran was going to be a quiet non fun water pistol affair this year, I think that it’s a case once again of Thai Junta eating the goose that lays the golden eggs that many working class Thais depend on tourists for a living.

unbelievable that you support controlling people like this and you are the FIRST person (maybe DJJamie as well so that's two of you) to think thailand is changing for the 'better' go ask all those business owners, staff and tourists who have NO choice with these draconian rules if it's 'better'

Please describe the draconian rules you are talking about! Is that regarding overuse of tourist visas, you can just forget about it.
For your information. The control of people in this country if far less than in the US of A.
Why it´s better is because the people that believe in freedom without responsibilites get kicked out on their ass.
Why it´s better is because people that speaks and thinks like you, will allways be the ones that loses the battle of staying.
Maybe in a few years of the same medicine, Thailand will be cured of all the people that comes hera and wants to take advantage.

Here come the TV old fuddies this site is famous for ????

It's not really an age thing and I hope it catches on in Pattaya--at least with the open-air establishments.  I , and others young and old, wouldn't have a problem with later hours if the noise was kept inside.  Some of us do have a problem with the open-air places blasting very loud and usually very bad music very late at night--so loud that you can hear it blocks away  with your windows closed and the air con on.

Totally ridiculous if the clubs will close at midnight. In Bali, they only open at that time. Nobody even turns up before midnight. Some clubs in Bali open at 3 a.m. and they go on until 8 or 9 a.m. Also in Bali, they actually know how to play good music. Bangkok's nightlife has always been terrible, but now it seems like it's just for the preteen kids.

Then go to Bali.  I thought it sucked compared to Thailand.

.............................. and the people who think its fine to be inconsiderate towards others!

In this day & age, we've all learned hiw important it is to make the distinction between the mainstream (inebriates) and that small minority of extremists. You are obviously failing to make this important distinction. A truly inebriated person probably woke you up one night, what, abt 8 years ago? Get over it. You're trying to make a big deal out of nothing. Lots of actual waking hour annoyances far more worthy of your peevishness.

I don't know how long you have been living in Pattaya, but unless it's longer than 30 years the bars were there before you.

If less, it's like buying a house next to an airport and complaining about the airplanes making a noise.

Not sure your example is that good.  An airport is a fairly permanent known thing that isn't going to normally pick up and move from one block to another one.   Airplanes make noise and not much can be done about that--so we don't buy a place to live next to an airport.  Bars come and go--closing in one location and opening in another.  Bars can also change--one day featuring a female lounge singer quietly crooning, the next changing to hard rock blasting at full volume.   I'm not saying bars should not be allowed, just that open-air ones should not be allowed to blast music into the wee hours of the morning.  Cities grow and change and what was acceptable to the residents 30 years ago may no longer be the case.

Yes! I am also talking about closing times. Just that I think it´s perfectly okey to close early or not have any venues open at all, and you appearently don´t. When I made my answer and question to you, I just took a rule that everybody talking the most about. Just for an example.

However! It´s still perfectly okey based on my opinion to close everything down. Would actually be more nice with some adventure parks and more attractions, instead of this annoying endless talk about that poor overdrinkers not have enough opening time to drink themselfs more stupid than usual.

I was actually meaning just living in Pattaya, not whether next to a bar years ago or not. In Pattaya or probably any Thai city or town, bars/ karaokes are constantly opening and closing. It's just part of the "joy" of living in LOS, and has been so for many years.

Sorry, but if you want proper enforced regulations I doubt they will be found in Thailand. However, that's why I like Thailand.

BTW, I doubt enough Thais that could actually do anything about it are affected, so don't expect change anytime soon.

I was lucky that during my twenties, which came in the 1990's, there was no 2 am curfew thing. All the clubs and most bars could close early morning. I had a great time back then. But since the 2 am curfew thing was introduced (either in 1999 or 2000), nightlife has never been the same for me.

Back when it was introduced, most people thought the curfew wouldn't last long. However, sadly, it has.
