Why does Pattaya bring out such debate?

I cannot think of a city that brings out such polarised views from staunch supporters – one well known media boss has long applauded it ‘the best city in the world’, which I always thought was stretching the truth or that he said it with tongue firmly in the side of his mouth. But his quote long sits in my mind.

I have travelled all over the world, I have seen the fake set up you get with a Macau or a Las Vegas, the beaches of the Maldives, Jamaica, Canada, Cuba, the shopping and Truman Show existence of Singapore etc etc…and I often ask the question: Where would I rather live than Pattaya? For all the beauty and USPs of other areas they also have their cons…Singapore amazed me, but to live there – forget it, Its just too regimented and fake for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I d be disappointed if I spent the rest of my years in this City of Variety. Life is too short not to experience new pastures. That’s just me and personal drives and objectives. But as a moment in time, is Pattaya really that bad?

Before I even go into what it offers, look at some of the other choices. The UK – where I left 10 years ago now – what the hell is going on there? A radical polarisation of political turmoil, where parties lose and still claim victory or when Brexit happens, but electorates don’t want to accept the result. The youth – who were always left anyway – bother to vote this time and now everyone thinks we have a socialist revolution on our hands. We haven’t. Two terrorist attacks in succession, leaving Europe, lots of bad feeling…it’s not a place I d want to be at the moment.

Its sour grapes, some of us are here living the dream. (we dont go to walking st and we didn't marry bar-girls)

The negatives are no different to any other expat area in Thailand, and the positives make it a great place to live, its affordable, great western infrastructure and lifestyle choices,

All of the criticism comes from ill-informed people who dont live here or visit, or even live in Thailand.

I have friends here that fly ultralights airplanes, race cars at the raceway, live in great houses/condos in small village like soi's, go deep sea fishing regularly, are part of the expat music scene, go to the pristine beaches just south of pattaya or out on the islands, go scuba diving,  ride motorbikes in a club with Thai and western members. They do all of this with their non bargirl Gf or wife.

When we eat and drink we have a choice that rivals any city in the word, cheap Thai food through to 5 star rooftop restaurants, and everything in-between. Most of the waitstaff have excellent language skills and are genuinely friendly because they have been dealing with westerners for decades..

We dont live in isolation to Thai people, we live together with thai people, have Thai friends and all the great aspects of Thai life.

We are not impacted by petty crime or ripoffs as we dont go to red light areas.

Why do people trash Pattaya? Its sour grapes, they live in there mothers basement in their home country and want to live here or they married a bargirl and live in nakon nowhere, were the only western infrastructure is the ATM

You obviously don't live in Nakhon whatever, do you?

Well I don't live in Pattaya, simply because I don't like it there.

Why?

You explained perfectly why you like Pattaya and why I don't like it.

So I live in Nakhon whatever, because I like it there.

Yes, between Thai people, eating Thai/Isan food mostly, and if I want to eat Western food I buy the ingredients and it will be prepared by the GF/wife or myself.

You are happy in Pattaya, and I am happy in Nakhon whatever.

Marvellous!

Another possible reason, other than sour grapes is that they never read a nice concise explanation of Pattaya's merits as what you have written above. I didn't know those things about Pattaya; taking that description at face value I'd say that it sounds like a better place to retire to than Florida.

I must say this is one of the best said reasons why I like Pattaya, haven't been to Walking Street in over 4 years and don't miss it.  Thanx for a well written post.:partytime2:

Totally agree with you ! You just missed out mentioning Papa Smurf in green... guess he's only jealous of our way of living and is trying to destroy our adult's Disneyland.

The centre of gravity of the entire universe is right outside the Marine Bar half way down Walking Street. There is no disputing this, only awed acceptance !

and soi hok is an important foundation of this planet.

Why?  Because it's dying a slow, agonizing, entirely predictable, death, and that just makes people desperate.  Desperate to prove they didn't make a mistake putting all their eggs into the immigration basket.  Desperate to prove it's not what the evidence indicates and common sense dictates.  Desperate to get other suckers to join them.  Desperate to justify lack of options.  Desperate to demonstrate their business interests will succeed and their nest eggs will survive intact.  Desperate to inject anecdotal happy faces into the stream of consciousness.  Clinical denial requires an outlet, a vent for frustrations and mounting worries about the future, and most of all circle-jerk validation.  And what can't be achieved through rational discussion and commentary, must be pursued by turning up the volume and resorting to ad hominem.   It's always been that way; human nature regressing to the lowest common denominator.   'Natural suppression of free speech.  Those who utter unpleasant truths must be silenced when possible, but at least marginalized at all costs.

That's because they all  cut there teeth in Pattaya.

Most if not all need a re-bore by the time they get to Hau Hin.

The most boring place in Thailand. :jap:

I'm always seeing the phrase "Pattaya is the sex tourism capital of the world". People come to Pattaya for many reasons, but it does attract an undesirable element from all corners of the world. I mean, almost the whole city is a red light district. Sex tourists don't have a reputation as being the nicest, friendliest type of people that you would let babysit your kids.

And I rest my case.  A perfect example.

The thing is, you 'rested your case' without providing one bit of evidence.  Not a single fact to back up your argument.  Just a lot of vague nonsense.  Give us some hard, concrete facts to back up your 'case' that Pattaya is dying a slow death.

Been hearing this same drivel churned out every year since i first came here in 1996, and i am quite sure somebody will still be regurgitating the same claptrap in another 20 years, but no matter how long it is spouted.....still wont make it any more factual!!

Take a wild guess!

Or just satisfy with the 3 alternatives below:

  • It´s a hub for all the worlds criminals.
  • A place where sexpats and sextourists can enjoy a beer together.
  • One of the cities in Thailand that ahve the highest percent of corruption.

And the question was.......???
