Hello All,

I did try and search for this information before posting and sorry if I am asking an old question. I have a BMW 118 that is imported from Germany and registered in China. We are looking to take our car with us to Chiang Mai and use it whilst we are there. My wife has the international drivers permit so as far as we know she is good to drive in Thailand. A main question is what do we need to do to allow us to drive in Thailand. Such as insurance, paperwork and government checks so that we can use our car there?

We plan to spend 90 days maximum in Thailand and also would like to know how long we can have our car in Thailand please? Is 90 days even possible?

To anyone who takes the time to reply we appreciate your time and again apologise if we are going over old ground.

Thanks....Thaibrewer

There were some new restrictions recently put into place with regard to Chinese drivers driving their cars in - causing accidents & fatalities.....It virtually shut down self driving tourism from China....

That might be a place to start....

There was a program at one time with large deposits & a 6 month in country max for a vehicle.....I only was aware of one (brought in for a competition).....They came in & out, but at 2 years and counting there was no return of the deposits paid although all the paperwork was professionally handled....

It's anybody's guess what could happen in your situation.....

Left hand drive? If so - probably unwise.....

Left hand drive I'd totally overlooked that! You're right far from ideal. It has been a couple of years since I was in Thailand and getting up to date info is hard.

I've written to the department of Transportation but not expecting a reply.

What you say about the self driving tourism and Chinese drivers make sense. Looks like we might be out of luck.

Anyway I'll keep looking for more info and thanks for taking the time to reply and with a lot of info too :-)
