Delivery Driver Killed in High-Speed Crash in Samut Prakan
Picture from responders. A delivery driver lost his life, and another person was injured when he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed into a parked vehicle and a pedestrian bridge in Samut Prakan. At approximately 13:30 on 2 March, police from Samrong Tai Police Station received a report of a serious road crash on Pu Chao Saming Phrai Road, heading from Phra Pradaeng Pier towards Samrong. The incident occurred near the Isuzu factory in Moo 3, Samrong Klang, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan. Emergency responders from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, along with rescue equipment, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a black Ford Ranger pickup truck, registration from Bangkok, overturned on its left side near the pedestrian bridge. The vehicle’s front and left side were completely wrecked. Inside, rescue workers found the body of 56-year-old Surasak Boonwasana, a delivery truck driver, trapped in the wreckage with severe head injuries. His body had to be extracted using cutting equipment. Nearby, a Yamaha NMAX motorcycle, registration from Bangkok, and a Honda Wave motorcycle, registration from Bangkok, were both damaged, along with the front glass of a barbershop. About 50 metres away at a U-turn, officers found a silver Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, registration from Bangkok, with extensive damage to its rear. Inside this vehicle was 31-year-old Lapatsarada Prathan, who suffered minor injuries. She had been sitting in the passenger seat while her husband and son were inside the barbershop. Emergency responders provided first aid before transferring her to a nearby hospital. CCTV footage captured the moment the black pickup truck, driven by the deceased, was travelling at high speed in the right lane before suddenly swerving left. It then slammed into the parked Isuzu pickup truck near the pedestrian bridge. Sunthorn Ponglun, 32, a witness, stated:“I was sitting by the road, when I saw the truck speeding past. It looked like the driver blacked out. He was in the right lane but suddenly swerved left and crashed into the parked pickup truck. A woman was inside that vehicle, but luckily she wasn’t badly hurt.” Chanaphisitha Tripornphun, 50, the barbershop owner whose motorcycles were damaged, described the impact:“I was cutting a customer’s hair when I heard a sound like an explosion. When I turned around, I saw the truck nearly hitting the pedestrian bridge. The glass at the front of my shop shattered, and both my motorcycles were destroyed. The driver must have been going over 100 km/h.” Warin Dechchai, 38, the owner of the parked Isuzu pickup truck, recounted:“I had just taken my son to the barbershop and left my wife waiting in the car. Less than ten minutes later, I heard a loud bang, like a tyre exploding. I ran out and saw my wife dazed with a small head wound. I was terrified something had happened to her. In my truck.” Sukchin Tama, 69, a friend of the deceased, speculated that alcohol may have been a factor:“Before the accident, he invited me to go home to Saraburi with him, as we often travelled together. But today, I decided not to go. Not long after, I heard about the crash. I suspect he was drunk because when he visited my house earlier, he seemed intoxicated. He didn’t have any underlying health issues but drank regularly. We had been friends for 13 years and worked as truck drivers together. He never married and often returned to Saraburi.” Police have taken initial photographs and logged the details of the crash. CCTV footage will be reviewed in further detail to confirm the cause. The deceased’s body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital for an autopsy. -- 2025-03-03 -

Gunman Surrenders After Fatally Shooting Rival in Songkhla

A 30-year-old man turned himself in to police after fatally shooting a rival in front of a house in Songkhla province, claiming he acted in self-defence after fearing he would be attacked with a machete. At around 07:30 on 2 March, officers from Rattaphum Police Station, Songkhla, were alerted to a fatal shooting at a residence in Moo 6, Tha Chamuang subdistrict, Rattaphum district. Police, forensic investigators, and medical personnel from Rattaphum Hospital were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the body of Mr Chamnarn 55, from Moo 12, Tha Chamuang. He had sustained four gunshot wounds to the head, torso, right arm, and hand, fired from a .38 calibre revolver. The victim lay in a pool of blood in front of the house. The suspect, Mr Warayuth 30, also from Tha Chamuang, fled the scene on a motorcycle but later surrendered at Rattaphum Police Station. He confessed to the shooting and admitted to disposing of the weapon in a canal behind his house. According to Mr Warayuth’s statement, he was riding his motorcycle to buy groceries when he encountered Mr Chamnarn, his long-time rival, standing outside his house. The suspect claimed he stopped to resolve their conflict, but the victim allegedly brandished a machete and attempted to strike him. Fearing for his life, Mr Warayuth said he stepped back, drew his firearm, and fired all six rounds in his revolver before fleeing home to dispose of the weapon. Mr Warayuth told police that Mr Chamnarn had previously threatened him and even attempted to attack him inside his home, possibly under the influence of drugs. He had reported the earlier incident to Rattaphum Police but tensions between them continued. On the morning of the shooting, he said he only stopped to talk but panicked when Mr Chamnarn raised the machete, prompting him to fire in self-defence. Local residents reported hearing multiple gunshots and, upon investigating, found Mr Warayuth standing with the gun in his hand while Mr Chamnarn lay motionless on the ground. However, they were too afraid to intervene. Authorities called in a rescue diving team from the Mitraphap Samakkhi Foundation in Hat Yai and Rattaphum Rescue to search the canal where Mr Warayuth claimed to have discarded the weapon, but it has yet to be recovered. Mr Warayuth has been charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and carrying a firearm in public without proper authorisation. -- 2025-03-03 -
