Girl in a wheelchair has been conned out of 5 million baht by bent lawyer, says mum

BANGKOK: -- A family whose lives were devastated by a road accident 12 years ago say they have been conned out of compensation by a bent lawyer.

Thai news media caught up with Pornthip Jantharat, 44, and her daughter Beam, 14, at the temple of Wat Cholaprathan in Nonthaburi, Bangkok, yesterday.

Mother and daughter are well known in the area to locals and monks. Beam and her mum sell items to people at funerals and suchlike to make ends meet.

They clearly are devoted to each other but few know the heartache and hardship they have had to face after what happened to them in Surat Thani in 2005.

They were travelling in a pick-up that was hit by an 18 wheel truck. Beam's father was killed, her mother was seriously injured and Beam was left in a wheelchair for life.

A lawyer called Phisit Sammalert kindly offered to help with their case.

After legal wranglings he told the mother and daughter that he had managed to get them one million baht compensation that would be paid in 40,000 baht monthly installments.

He said that he was unable to travel to have them sign the papers related to this but he would transfer the cash each month. This he did but after only seven months of payment he disappeared.

Calls to his mobile went unanswered.

Desperate the family went to investigate at the court and discovered to their horror that the truck company had in fact paid a lump sum of five million baht that went to the lawyer, the mother claimed.

It should have then gone to the family.

Pornthip has appealed to the lawyer's council and the government watchdog Damrongtham over the years but the case has gone cold and they don't know what to do now.

So they are trying to get the media to help get them justice.

That really is a low life scumbag thing to do. Given he had told them they would get 1 million, if he had paid they would probably never have known different and he would have pocketed 4 million. That is itself would have been a horrible thing to do. By cheating them of even that and being disgustingly greedy, now the family know the truth. I sincerely hope this utter toerag is found and suffers the consequences of his awful actions. Take everything he has and feed him to the pigs.

Reminds me of the farang lawyer, in Thailand, who only helps after the customer has transferred their property to him.

All over the World you will find crooked lawyers.

They are the most corrupt people in the World.

Surely the Thai law society (or equivalent) know where he is.

Saying that they like to protect their own. Scum the lot of them.

That's exactly it....back in the states I once (foolishly) tried to hire an attorney to file a suit against another lawyer. He spent 20 minutes telling me how difficult things were in these types of cases, how I should just forget it, and BTW old "Mr. XYZ" wasn't really a bad lawyer, he knew him from professional meetings and I should just let it go. That's when I realized how corrupt the profession is.

totally agree the first thing they learn at law college is to lie out of the hole in their ass, (personal experience) its all a show, slag each other off in court, and are drinking buddies outside of it.

Just shows the state of things here ,when they are  trying to get the

media to help, and not the Police,as should be the case,as the "lawyer"

definitely committed fraud.some people seem devoid of morals, what

kind of person could do that to a young girl, and sleep at night.just

hope the media can put pressure on the Police, and get them to move

their @rses and find the crook,

"So they are trying to get the media to help get them justice."

Thank God for the social media.

They can do a lot for justice - in particular when the legal way fails

Would be good if they could get hold of a picture of this scumbag.

And let him be chased

Isn't there a Bar Association where a complaint can be

filed?  Where are the courts....Can't they make him

at least present,His side of this matter and threaten to

revoke His law license....can't the Judges refuse to have

him in their court rooms or refuse to sign any legal

documents drawn up by Him until this matter is at least

reviewed???

Sadly Thailand stands head and shoulders above all other countries in blatant judicial corruption. Once in court a judge asked me why did I sign a document proffered my lawyer? I innocently said if I can't trust my lawyer who can I trust? The judge replied ... " Do you trust uneducated bar girls from Isaan ?"

"pass the bar" -or- "bar fine".   Tough choice there

So the money stopped 11 years, 5 months ago.

Thats an awful long time to wait to get the message out.

They followed the legal process without results and recent events where the media helped people prompted them to use thst avenue.

Can you find an honest lawyer, in Thailand?

The problem in Thailand is that the Lawyer title is not protected - with other words basically anyone can title themselves as a lawyer with all the significant consequences that stupidness opens for...
