Eye lens implants

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am getting tired of wearing my glasses and they are getting daily more and more in my way.

Do you know any good clinics and doctors who have the experience in Thailand?

What do I have to expect in regards to operation, aftercare, risks in your opinion? I read already a lot as I considered doing a lassie operation. But according to the doctors it would be no option for me.

What would be the costs I need to expect?

I do know that there are 2 types of lenses normal and multi focal. I am looking for normal ones.

Any positive or negative answers are welcome and please refrain from advertising glasses or contact lenses. I am not able to wear contact lenses for different reasons and as said am getting tired of wearing glasses.

Believe you are asking about IOL that is normally done when cataracts are removed?  For single focus lens price seems to run from about 16k to 100k depending on source (16k would be inexpensive government hospital).  Expect most people on forum pay in the 50-60k range all included for the single focus.

This is a hospital OPD procedure (clinics are for beauty or after hours for the most part in Thailand) and the best known facility is Rutnin Eye Hospital (believe there price would be in the 50k or above range).  But any large hospital will have doctors able to do this procedure.

A friend had both eyes done recently in a private hospital. Cost for multi vision lenses was just over 200,000 baht.

I had Intra Ocular lens replacement in both eyes about 5/6 years ago, if memory serves me right.

I too was like you and was sick to death of wearing glasses and my eye doc spotted what he

suspected was the beginnings of a cataract in one of my eyes so recommended lens replacement.

In my opinion the best decision I have ever made, no more glasses and 20/16 vision for a while, it

is now only 20/20 and will with time I am informed by the doc deteriorate slowly, but the surgery

can be repeated to revive vision apparently.

I had my surgery at Bangkok Phuket Hospital and the cost was around 78,000 baht per eye and went

very well approximately 1 to 1.5 hours including prep for surgery. Same procedure on other eye about

5 to 7 days later. The biggest problem was that you cannot shower or wash your hair for 2 weeks, not

wonderful but wholly worth it. All carried out as an outpatient, home after surgery.

I would imagine that the cost may be considerably more after 5/6 years but I don't know for sure?

I know at least 5 other people here in Phuket who have had the same procedure and all are as happy

as I am with the results.

I would definitely recommend it.

I lifted this from Bangkok Phuket Hospital Site gives you much more info but no price unfortunately.

Thank you for the info. Do you remember as well the total time frame from eye examination until operation. How long did it take?

I have type 2 diabetes so I have 4 monthly check ups so I can't really remember the time from exam

to op, that, I presume, would be up to you, if you want to go ahead i would think your eye specialist

would give you the next convenient date.

BTW I had multi-focals fitted.

There has to be an exam to check size of lens needed and from that hospital will order lens so there normally would be some delay (but if single vision do not believe very long).

Most decent hospitals, like BPH, keep a stock of standard sizes, multi and single only need to wait if

your eyes require something different or special. In that case the delay is only a few days to order and

and get delivery from Bangkok.

Does having intra ocular implants remove the floaters?

No.  The eye is divided into two chamber (anterior(front) and posterior(rear))  Floaters are almost always contained in the posterior chamber. The lens is associated with the anterior chamber and replacing it will not remove floaters.

Most people learn to ignore floaters but if they are particularly troublesome (or they block vision) there is a surgical option but that is not without risk and is only rarely undertaken.

I had a big one appear a week or so ago, up until then always had the small floating dots, but now have this quite large horseshoe shaped floater that is quite distracting. Hopefully, I will learn to ignore mine.

You should consider having your eyes examined to ensure the problem is only a floater.

Already done. Went to the specialist at Bkk/Pattaya hospital the day after it appeared. After a thorough examination the doctor couldn't  find any problems other that age related degeneration of the retina. Have a follow-up examination in a couple of weeks.
