New License Plates...Return Old Ones?

Featured Replies

So I bought a used car and had to get the registration transferred to my local province, which also involved getting new plates. This was all done by an agent... no problem. I got the new plates and the agent says when I put the new plates on I have to return the old plates to them. Is this so... does the agent have to return the old plates to the LTD or can I just keep them?

The old plates should be returned to the Department of Land Transportation (DLT)

A bit strange then that they let me drive off with both sets of plates. (They did hand me a screwdriver and like expected me to swap them right then and there but I said I would do it at home and drove off.)

Yeah done it 2 times once with DLT and once with an agent.

Don't keep em.

When I had to transfer my car to the new province, they wouldn't give me the new plates until I handed them the old ones.

That is the usual procedure to change them there and then and hand the old plates back in. Done this a few times. Do not keep them.

I bought my used truck in BLK and new plates came to Phuket in the mail. I never returned the old ones at the advise of my GF who is usually wrong about such things. I suppose I'll drop them at the DLT next time I'm in the area.

The same number or a new one?

I have bought a number of 2nd hand cars over the years and never got a new nr or plates while registering from one province to another.

Just kept the same nr plates.

The same on my current 2nd hand car.

I bought both a motorcycle and car in another province. And then in my province got new plates and was required to give DLT the old ones.

I just asked my Thai wife and she says also, change names but not plates.

So I really don't understand why they make you do this.

The vehicle might belong to you but the plates (official ones, anyway) always belong to the DLT.

Registration Plate must be from Your Province ended about 10 years ago. If you buy a vanity plate, the old one needs retuning for distruction.

It's not uncommon just to drive the vehicle you purchased in another province without getting plates from your home province.

Unless things have changed you can only transfer the title in the province the vehicle is registered in. Hence, why it's common to re-register the title and get "local" plates to avoid this hassle down the road.

New.

On a related issue, experience the bureaucracy of replacing a lost number plate. Much better not to lose one.

Buggering around with No Plates re ID17

I'm still none the wiser...as far as I'm aware they do still require you to return the old number plates when they issue new ones due to a change of province....of course is you just let the dealer do all the paperwork and running around thing can be "different"
