Hi all,

I married a Thai gal a year ago and wonder if there are any visas/ID cards, etc. you recommend I apply for? We don't live in Thailand, but visit 5-10 times a year. We probably spend about 45-60 days a year in the country in total. Some have suggested the non-immigrant type-O visa, but wonder if there is much point in doing so if we don't live here. It would be nice skip the passport control queue at the airport. ✈️

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A multi-entry non-O would be ideal in your case, you are pretty much what it is designed for.  As for skipping queues that cant be done, but you can probably use the Thai line with your wife (not guaranteed though).

Thanks for the reply. I'm new to these forms and am still getting the hang of things. I wonder if you could point me to a thread or website that explains how I can apply for this type of visa. I'm only here for another week, but I believe this visa has to be secured from a Thai embassy overseas if I'm not mistaken?

Cheers!

You get a non-O from a consulate or embassy outside Thailand.  Nearby you can get one in Savanakhet easily without any financial evidence.  In Penang with THB400k in a Thai account.  The requirements vary country by country,  You can probably get one where you live, wherever that is.

Thank you. We live in Qatar. They have a Thai embassy there so hopefully we can get it done there.

Do you know if the bank account can be in my wife's name rather than mine?

If Doha will do it and what they will want to see is an unknown, at least to me!  As for the money, it would need to be in an account in your name.

You don't need a visa if you're a national from one of the countries that qualify for visa exempt entry and none of your stays are likely to exceed 30 days.

If you want to get a visa then a multiple entry non-immigrant 'O' visa would be the one to get.

A Non O multiple entry on the basis of marriage will usually not require financial proof if applied for in your country of residence outside the region. However, this does vary. Rather than speculate, check with the Thai embassy when you return to Qatar. Unless it proves difficult, I would be inclined to get the visa as occasionally people have trouble with visa exempt entries. However, if there are complications getting the Non O, you do have visa exempt entries to fall back on that will usually be OK.

Thank you for the replies everybody. They are greatly appreciated. I will check with Qatar when I return. If they are unable to do it, I will be visiting Canada later this summer as well.

Although our visits are usually spaced out far enough that they don't look like visa runs, I recently had 2 such trips. My wife works in aviation, so I often fly to meet her on layovers if she is somewhere near me while I'm on vacation. In June, I stayed in Thailand for 18 days, flew out to meet my wife for 3 days, returned to Thailand for 23 days, flew out for 4 days, and am now back again. I've heard that some people have recently been turned away at immigration for similar quick trips away (often visa runs) and/or not having 20,000 baht in cash on hand.

Because of our work schedules, my wife isn't always with me when I fly in. As many have suggested, I think I will apply for the non-O visa in Doha or Canada.
