Disaster averted as fire in LPG tanker put out in time

By The Nation

A huge explosion was averted in Samut Prakan province late Friday night when firefighters managed to put out a blaze in a 7-tonne LPG gas tanker.

Police and the fire station were alerted at 11.30pm that an LPG tanker had caught fire on the Takad bridge on Paekkasa Road in Tambon Thai Ban Mai in the province’s Muang district.

When they rushed to the scene, they found the left rear tyres of the 10-wheel gas tanker on fire. The firemen took about 20 minutes to put it out.

Police said the tanker had left Thanasit Logistics Co Ltd with seven tonnes of LPG gas for Krathumban but its left rear tyre burst and caught fire.

So why did this Tyre catch Fire? Flat and overheated? Incompetent driver not checking Tires?

I guess it took so long to put the fire out as they must have been squirting water from at least 200 yards away...

Look up BLEVE.  Anyone within 200 meters could be incinerated if it went up.

I thought that when I was typing it...

I was thinking 900-1000 yards, but you would need a hell of a pump to spray from that distance.
