Driver pulled from car moments before flames engulf it

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A car burst into flames after it hit a pedestrian flyover on the outbound Vibhavad-Rangsit highway in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district late Sunday night, police said.

Taxi motorcyclists at a taxi stand under the bridge helped the driver escape before the car was engulfed by flames.

Police said the Benz C200 hit a concrete barrier over a pillar of the bridge, before it smashed into the bridge’s stairs in front of Soi Vibhavadi-Rangsit 9.

Firefighters took about 10 minutes to put out the blaze.

The impact of the crash caused a pedestrians rail on the bridge to fall down.

The driver, Phawat Chaichanawitchakij, 24, suffered from a broken left leg and head injuries and was taken to Paolo Hospital.

Thanom Jainual, 49, a foundation rescuer, said he was watching TV at the motorcycle taxi stand and heard a loud braking noise and then saw the car speeding towards him.

He said the car hit the barrier and became airborne.

He said he smelled something burning so he and other taxi motorcyclists removed the driver from the vehicle.
