Gooseberry

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever tried to grow gooseberry here?

I was on the southbound train going through Ratchaburi recently and some lady was selling little bags of

them for 20 baht each. I had never tried them before and they were delicious.

I kept the seeds and was drying them out at home after I got back, but my wife threw them out.

I was pretty keen on growing them, but now have no idea where to get seeds. :(

Anyway, just interested to get input from anyone who has tried this fruit. gooseberry.jpg.c9694d957178c3eb6e9ccf84abd42abc.jpg

Never grown them here, I'd really like to get some seeds though.

Were you sure the were Gooseberries, never seen them here, but they

When I asked the lady what they were called, she just said 'gooseberry'. And when I asked her for the Thai name she said she didn't know. I think that the one you are referring to is called mayom . I have a tree already in my yard. The fruit are much smaller and are super sour, not sweet at all.

The Thais also use the stems, which are like little whips, to administer corporal punishment to children. Anyway, hopefully somebody can help me find seeds.

I would root cuttings instead of seeds, that will likely give you a better chance of success.

I have very fond memories of my days as a child picking gooseberries. "One for me and one for my mother's basket"... I too have been thinking recently of trying to grow them here... I rather enjoy homemade gooseberry jam.

Weird that I never heard of it before. Must be an English thing. Anyway, I will report back if/when I can locate some seeds...

If I can find one I will try that. But what part do you cut off? I am a total novice on this stuff..
