BANGKOK, 21 August 2017 (NNT) – Bangkok authorities are promoting the scheduled pick up of large waste items each Sunday as part of a campaign to encourage citizens not to discard of garbage in waterways.

Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Assawin Kwanmuang chaired the launch of a new campaign promoting citizens to only discard of large garbage items on Sundays. The governor rode a boat along Khlong Prawes Buriram to encourage people living along the waterway to not discard large sized trash into the water and to instead wait for a scheduled pick up by the city each Sunday.

In his address to communities, the governor indicated that Bangkok contends with up 10,000 tons of waste each day with the number slated to grow. The large volume of waste has become an environmental issue and is part of the reason for flooding in the capital. All 50 districts of the city have now been told to urge residents to schedule their garbage pick-ups, especially when disposing of large items. Those with a large volume of oversized garbage can contact authorities for an individual pick-up.
