CHIANG RAI: -- Drug mules dumped five bags containing 578,000 methaphetamine pills after being chased by a police car, but managed to speed away in Chiang Rai province’s Mae Sai district on Wednesday morning.

Police manning a road checkpoint on Mae Sai-Chiang Rai Road in Tambon Pong Pha in Mae Sai chased the car after it stopped 150 metres before the checkpoint and reversed in the direction it came from.

When police at the checkpoint went after it, the car turned to a road along an irrigation canal, slowed down and dumped five bags.

The police car stopped to check the bags and found 289 packets, each containing 2,000 meth pills, police said.

Nobody asked me, but......

Ok, I'm not familiar with meth, though I did speed when in high school in Wash DC, a coon's age ago.

Here's what I suggest for policy:  have a gov't approved agency make the stuff.  Make sure it's clean (most street-bought drugs are cut with all sorts of gnarly stuff).   Have gov't or NGO sell low-cost to people who are loosely registered:  maybe just their first name, and tel#.  Each person who requests to buy it would be counselled as to how unhealthy it is.

With that sort of program, here's what would happen:

>>>  Illegal trade would abate.

>>>  drug kingpins would lose power and money, and may even have to get a real job, like washing dishes at a hotel.

]>>>  Drug users wouldn't be criminalized, and face having their lives ruined.

>>>  Drug users would get info which may wean them off drugs.

>>>   The 'legal' drugs would be smaller dose, and not as toxic.

>>>   They can find out about less harmful drugs which will ease the process of weaning off the bad stuff.

Everyone is vain about their appearance and health.  If drug users can be shown that doing drugs makes them uglier and makes their hair and teeth fall out, then most will get spooked enough to quit.

Similar could be said about alcohol, cigs, coffee, sugar, heroin, ......but those are dissertation for another day.  Note:  National Geographic Magazine asserts that sugar is addictive.  Also:  more harm elicits from pharma drugs than all illegal drugs combined. Whether alcohol causes more harm than pharma drugs is an open question.   What do you think?

I just re-read the OP:  It sounds like the police let the culprits drive away - either through stupidity (stopping to assess the drugs which were dropped by the road), or for other reasons, none of which look good for authorities.
