BANGKOK: -- A team of traffic policemen helped a Myanmar woman deliver her child on the sidewalk of a Bangkok soi on Thursday morning.

Pol Captain Pirawut Mai-ong, Pol Captain Samatcha Phumsathan and Lieutenant Pichet Wisetchok provided the assistance to the woman, who remained unidentified, on Soi 4 off Pridi Bhanomyong Road at 8.50am.

The woman was waiting for a vehicle to take her to the hospital but she could not wait to deliver so passers-by alerted police who arrived in time to help her.

The mother and the baby boy were taken to the Police Hospital afterwards.

Traffic police are trained to help deliver babies due to an initiative by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol because of the notorious traffic congestion on Bangkok streets.
