Have you been scammed/overcharged at 7-11?
scorecard replied to JoseThailand's topic in General Topics
Which is why at many 7/11 branches only one staff member is allowed to be the cashier / allowed to touch the cash register drawer. Also why they count the change many time before they hand it to the customer. Staff have to pay the company if they make a mistake Happens in Thai banks too. -

Changing visa while work permit still valid
scorecard replied to Lolothai's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Any member ever heard of stand by work payment? I've never heard of it. To the poster, the Thai labor law is quite specific. Employers cannot make new 'regulations' as they see fit. Seen this before. Small newspaper owner in Pattaya (published in English) employed several foreigners as reporters / journalists (no experience needed), telling them that they didn't need a work permit because his business held an approval from the Labor department for 10 foreigners. (A couple of the the reporters / journalists) said they asked to see the 'approval letter' held by the newspaper owner but he refused saying it was a secret documents not available to employees). The business owner claimed he could add / remove foreigners names from the list of 10 as he saw fit. All fell apart, owner went to jail, guilty of several charges, then deported and black listed. All of the so called reporters / journalists the same, instantly taken to the immigration detention centre (IDC), fined on several charges and deported and black listed. From the IDC the so called reporters / journalists employed a lawyer who quickly discovered the newspaper owner had a very scaly past history, including jail, in India, in Cambodia and in Thailand. -

Shinawatras Lose Golf Club Ownership, but Lease Option Open

QUOTE: "The outcome could set precedents for managing land donations and religious assets across the nation, reported Bangkok Post." This is not a new matter, it's been mentioned in news services /' been reported on / discussed by highly respected senior legal eagles many time before. Previously it's been reported that the existing Thai law (existing for many decades) that temple land (no matter how the temple acquired the land) cannot be sold under any circumstances. Setting precedents is not an appropriate approach, the matter is specifically already covered by Thai law, as above: "existing Thai law (existing for many decades) that temple land (no matter how the temple acquired the land) cannot be sold under any circumstances". Also note that Sanoh Tienthong a very scaly / very corrupt previous politician and long-term buddy of thaksin was very involved in selling the land and in the development of the housing estate. This is a man who would see his mother if offered a half good price, And he had no respect for the law about anything. -
Biden pardons Fauci, Miley and Jan 6 committee staffers!
scorecard replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox
But let's keep in mind that a person might be convicted because of the political / juristic powers present rather than convicted because of fact. Which could mean Biden is anticipating that the folks listed will be charged and convicted as a result of political forces, so Joe is getting ahead of the events in advance. -

In my experience the ministry is always very helpful, polite, focused and clear explanation. Plus they have many advanced English speakers if needed. -
Can kids under 18/20 be members? Perhaps their response was a not very logical attempt to find an excuse. Here in Chiang Mai, my Thai adult son, his Thai wife and my adult Thai granddaughter have been at the large Fascino shop, when it was time to buy 'Are you a member?" 'NO' 'Do you want to sign up?' YES Five minutes later membership on our smartphone screens. Discount applied to current purchase.

Has Elon Musk become an existential threat to humanity?
scorecard replied to RSD1's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I wonder how many people, Americans and others, realize that all of these incredible technologies he has announced were NOT invented by musk. He's an entrepreneur, he finances things so he takes the liberty of saying that these items are his inventions when thy are not. He also has a reputation for being very unpleasant / insulting to his staff and to staff of contractors, at all levels, so much so that many companies he's working with forbid him from talking direct to their staff, and will only allow such discourse when 2 senior executives of the contracting company being used are personally on the spot and musk must talk to them rather than to an employee he wants to berate. -

Talking to Thais, have you ever had "Pow Wow" moments?
scorecard replied to Jingthing's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I doubt that, en masse, they have had much exposure to American pop culture. I had a loud know it all American, about 23 years old, from New York, who used way too much American slang etc., when he spoke to his Thai class mates. He was quite arrogant and he was convinced he was the post popular male in the class. Numerous times he would suddenly talk over the top of what I was reading / explaining to the class insisting that he should explain anything / everything about the US. (And he did the same to other professors, one prof. refused to teach him.). Many times other class members interrupted his interruption saying 'I didn't join this course to learn about America'. aas. HE WAS CONVINCED HE WAS THE MOST POPULAR MALE IN THE CLASS (M/F. 50/50) wS XONVINCED HE AD QUITE ARROGANT -

Thai minister demands Shinawatra family forfeit Alpine Golf land
scorecard replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Yes, I recall watching the proceedings on TV news when the paymaster 'bought' the very large piece of gov't land that his then wife wanted for her. The paymaster was all big smiles. The several very senior ministry officers present all looked very concerned. It seemed to me they were all thinking this is totally illegal, because by serious Thai laws politicians are totally banned from buying government owned land and property. In reality all countries have such laws to block politicians from buying the country. Very understandable. -

Furniture/Personal Possessions/Container From UK

...and can involve commercial agents / customs staff playing many games. I imported a small amount of furniture and many boxes of my teaching / subject textbooks. I had found documents which gave import duty rates. but when I went to the airport (with my commercial agent they showed me bound booklets quoting rates which, in every case, were 3 times the rates on the documents I had found. And a bit naughty but i stole one of the bound Thailand Customs Rates books. The unI i was working for instructed one of their admin staff to check the rates, she discovered (as I had) the rates books were fake and the rates were 3 times the official rates. The uni admin lady challenged the customs staff and I was then given a new customs duty bill one third of the original bill. Un lady challenged again threatening to contact the prime ministers office. New bill then reduced by 50% and quite reasonable. But later the uni lady discovered that I should not have paid any import tax. We didn't challenge any more. -
